Book Reviews of Something Borrowed

Book Review: It was an entertaining read
Summary: 4 Stars

This book was very entertaining. The author did a good job at maintaining a level of suspense that kept me turning the page. I agree with others that Rachel was definitely a "whiny" character, but I think it gave the reader an inside look at people with great lives who, nevertheless, walk around feeling sorry for themselves, being quietly insecure, blaming others for their unhappiness, and never asserting what they truly want from life. There ARE people like that, so I appreciated the author giving us a glimpse into their thought process.

However, clearly, there was more to Rachel given her actions (versus her low self-esteem internal dialogue) and I wish the writer would've presented her multi-dimensionality more evenly ... I think she would've been a more liked character for it. She was just so darn passive. In any case, the same is true (or even more true) for the other characters. I never understood why Rachel remained Darcy's friend or even why she liked her at all (we all get stuck with friends like that in our youth, but we shake 'em off well before our 30's). Dex came across as a boring wimp and his lack of guilt hinted at a weak moral character. I don't think they had to be "bad" people to fall in love and have an affair, but I think his complete lack of guilt on the matter shed him in a very negative light. Anyway, ultimately, are just points of discussion for a book club, but certainly don't take away from the enjoyment of the book - it was very entertaining.

The part that does take the book a notch down in quality is the ending. Without giving it away, the ending was a TOTAL cop-out. The author could've really taken the whole book to a higher level by not side-stepping the issue and turning Darcy into the bad guy. Whether Dex and Rachel ended up together or not, there was a very good opportunity to really delve into the complexity of friendship, betrayal, true love, assertiveness, happiness, etc. The author just went the cheap soap opera route.

Having said all that, Emily Giffin is a very good writer and her novel was, bottom line, very entertaining. I would read it again and will read her others. I can only imagine that she will continue to develop her craft and work out the minor kinks in future novels. The fact that her characters have elicited such strong emotions from so many reviewers is testament that she did something RIGHT!

Summary of Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl---until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend, Darcy, throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fianc?. Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness. Something Borrowed is a phenomenal debut novel that will have you laughing, crying, and calling your best friend.
