Book Reviews of Something BlueBook Review: Delicious chunk of good reading Summary: 5 Stars
An Emily Giffin book is a soft caress disturbed by an occasional outburst of laughter. Her writing is marred with ripples of humor and real life relationship woes as she is a brightly shining star whom by far surpasses chick lit authors on the market.
This warm and engaging story is a follow up to Giffin's previous novel "Something Borrowed" but can be read out of order or on it's own but I seriously recommend reading all of her novels. In this story the main character is Darcy, a fashion forward, beauty and money obsessed thirty year old who soars in her PR work world in Manhattan.
While engaged to Dex, her perfect boyfriend of seven years, Darcy finds herself in an awkward position when she discovers that her mousy best friend Rachel has stolen her fiancées heart and mind. Not so pure herself, the main character is as flawed as a colander I rinse my cooked pasta and fruits in but she has plenty of warm charm under her childish coat of arms and her superficial at times attitude. She can be hard to like but I found myself rooting for her, even though all her friends were picking sides and they seemed to be on Rachel and Dex's side, but for a reason I wish not to spoil to anyone. Alone and confused, in an interesting condition, Darcy tried to re-assemble her life, regroup her remaining friends and to come out on top of the dating world, proving she can find her prince charming even when her entire life is falling through a paper shredder of emotions. When she visit her parents back in Indiana and to her annoyance sees that all her friends and family are either engaged or terribly happy she starts to break down and looses the grip on the situation she could always control simply based on her good looks when those aren't enough anymore.
Darcy finds herself shocked and upset that her plain looking friend stole her perfect man and she goes half way across the world to London to visit her childhood friend Ethan who seems to side with Rachel as well. Distressed and crushed again Darcy has to find her true self in the sea of strangers and to win their affection she has to rely on the quality of her soul and not on her perfect highlights or expensive frocks and a model thin body. I absolutely adored Darcy's challenges and her fallouts and wished her all the best as I cheered her on in my mind and was pleasantly surprised and at times appalled at things that happened to her. . I was also extremely impressed with the author's ability to argue both sides, Darcy and people she went head -to- head with, they all had valid points and I couldn't believe at times that the situations they were in were written by one person. The books feels and reads like a real life drama and it was a wonderful interruption to my usually busy work weeks.
Darcy is hilarious, a real hoot who quickly disarmed me even though I have no patience for silly characters and I hope to read about her in future books by this stunningly talented author.
