Book Reviews of Small Favor (The Dresden Files, Book 10)Book Review: I owe you one Summary: 4 Stars
I knew Jim Butcher would make Harry Dresden regret owing favors to the Faerie Queen Mab. In Small Favor, the 10th installment of Butcher's Dresden Files series, Mab calls on Harry to fulfill the second of three owed favors - rescuing Johnny Marcone (now a major player in Chicago's magical circles as well as an organized crime boss) from some heavy hitting magical kidnappers. The catch (aside from the fact that Harry and Marcone aren't all that chummy) is that he has to do this while fighting off Faerie assassins, training an apprentice, convincing his friends that his soul is still intact, and kick-starting his love life. Nothing is ever easy for everyone's favorite urban wizard.
Butcher has built a remarkably strong supporting cast around Harry, and he brings them into perfect alignment here. Not only do we see members of the Summer and Winter Courts of Faerie, but the Michael and the Knights of the Cross and their arch-enemies the Order of the Blackened Denarius are in on the action. Throw in Johnny Marcone's mob outfit, the White Council and a token vampire (Thomas) and you have a full-on Dresden Files event!
Small Favor is all action, all the time, and the pacing makes for a grand adventure story. Butcher's dialogue is as sharp as always, and geek culture references abound. There are still too many descriptions of meals and wardrobes for my tastes, but I've accepted that as par for the course. All told, Small Favor is another completely enjoyable entry in the Dresden Files series, and should please just about any Harry Dresden fan.
Book Review: Deftly plotted and very satisfying read. Summary: 4 Stars
In "Small Favor" Harry faces a moral dilemma and makes compromises with his principles when he rescues the local crime boss, John Marcone, and the child Archive from the evil Denarians. Despite being in over his head facing off with the Denarians and an ancient evil skinwalker from the southwest US, with the help of a few friends Harry prevails, at some cost. One of the holy Knights of the Cross, his friend Michael, is critically injured during their escape. But Harry identifies a traitor at the White Council headquarters who is killed by the Warden Morgan, who dies of all of his injuries. So although the book ends with some bad guys vanquished there are still shadows and questions to be answered. Jim Butcher is a master at this kind of up-down ending which is part of the reason this Series, The Dresden Files, is so realistic. Several subplots of the series are deftly moved forward and you will look forward to the next book after reading this one. Highly Recommended,
Book Review: Small Favors Summary: 4 Stars
I'm reading the Dresden Files books in order, and while I'm enjoying this one it isn't winning any prizes as the best in the series. It still has the wonderful wit and intelligent humor that makes me love the books (hence the 4 stars still quite in tact), but the reason it's not getting the 5th star is because so far (I'm about 1/3 of the way in) it feels like the author is rehashing bits of old plots into a new plot. I am hoping as I continue reading that will change... Still a great book and a good read, don't get me wrong. Just not his best.
Book Review: 9.99 for a paperback Summary: 4 Stars
wow, I just had to comment on the PRICE... I have books less than 20 yrs old sitting all over my house under 2.00 each of the same genre, level or higher of author, and size of book... good GOD EVERYTHING has gone up 600% since I was a kid...
It's ok, I haven't gotten to this one yet, so I guess I'll be looking for a used copy when I do... (just finished 7)
Book Review: Great Story, but the book size... Summary: 4 Stars
Why did they change the actual size of the book? It's about an inch longer than all the other paperback editions of the other Dresden books. It now looks ridiculous on the shelf. A small complaint overall I guess, but it makes no sense. The story itself is obviously great... it's Dresden.
