Book Reviews of Small Favor (The Dresden Files, Book 10)

Book Review: The Series Keeps Getting Better
Summary: 5 Stars

Harry Dresden and the cast are back for another round in A Small Favor. All of the major players have a piece in this tale, from the Faerie Courts to the Wardens and White Council, Marcone and his cronies as well as the entire Blackened Denarius (Nicklehead) crew, the Archive, the Knights and some of the powers unseen. The story is driven strongly by the sub plot of the last few books, with the formation of the Black Council and how their manipulations across the supernatural world are causing havoc.

Harry has been called in for a favor from Queen Mab of the Winter Court of the Sidhe. His job; rescue Marcone. Do this while dodging hitters from the Summer Court who have a knack for finding him, as well as hitters from the Winter Court who seem to disregard the fact that Harry is on their team, and doing battle with various enemies of the Fallen, the Order of the Blackened Denarius. From the first chapter to the last, the book is a rush of organized anarchy, with everything depending on Harry and his talent for being the wrench stuck in every dark plan that swings his way.

Its the 10th book of the series and doesn't disappoint. Now starts the countdown to Book 11.

Book Review: Butcher does it again
Summary: 5 Stars

With any great series, I try to take it slow as it would be another year before I see my favorite characters again. And as usual, as soon as I get the book home, I dive right into it and don't let up until I finish, which is usually the next day. Small Favor was awesome! With every new Dresden novel, Jim Butcher just keeps getting better and better. Butcher is a master at dry wit and great dialogue, and always tops himself with every new adventure. Small Favor was action packed and full of laughs, my favorite part being when Torelli tells Harry to name his price, and Harry says, " one hundred and fifty-six gajillion dollars". It was great to see all the old characters from past Dresden Files, and all I can say is, it's about time Harry is starting hook up with a woman! I started to feel really bad for Harry that he couldn't seem to catch a break where women are concerned, so here's hoping things work out for him!

Book Review: Things are just starting to pick up.
Summary: 5 Stars

Another great addition to the Dresden Files. As Jim Butcher really starts digging into his characters he is able to intertwine the relationships so the stories don't seem like "oh, today's guest star is [blank]". Jim Butcher also is letting each character grow with the novels and not remain a static 2-D person to play the foil-du-jour to Harry Dresden. In Small Favor, many past characters and story lines build up more steam as Dresden has what might be called a "crapstorm" dumped on him. For those of you familiar he has to deal with the Denarians, Winter (Mab), Summer (Titania), the Archive and Kincaid, no support from the C.P.D., Gentleman Johnny Marcone, and what turns to be a little more insight into the Black Council. You can almost feel Jim Butcher using 'Small Favor' to take mythos of Harry Dresden and crank things up a notch and given what has been said and done, the future is "gonna get really good!"

Book Review: excellent book in an excellent series
Summary: 5 Stars

The Winter Queen Mab wants Harry to rescue Gentleman Johnny Marcone (gangster) from kidnapers who are very very powerful magically. As Harry still has to repay 2 of 3 favors owed he is stuck. The Queen of Summer opposes him just to make things interesting.

Usual excellent characters as well as good humor (the eldest and most powerful Gruf). Nicely done plot with good twists and over all excellent. A few minor bobbles mostly being unsure of whether or not its Summer or Winter.

One unresolved item, why is the Queen of Summer in opposition?

With considerable patience and thought this can be read standalone but I strongly recommend the series at least from Summer Knight (The Dresden Files, Book 4) if not the start.

Book Review: A great addition to one of my favorite series.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book delivers tons of action, a huge cast, and a plot that seems to be a harbinger of the future. All considered, an amazing and worthwhile addition to the series as a whole.

I can understand the complaints some people have about this as compaired with the other books. That being said, a long-term interconnected series requires entries that hit different notes. No one ever made a symphony with just one note repeated over and over.

Churchy? Is that a criticism. I think that considering the abundance, maybe overabundance, of bad guys throughout the series it's fair to have some of the 'good' guys poke their head in and say hello. 'sides, Harry might ally himself with the angels, but he's never gonna be a choir boy.

In the end, totally worth reading. Keep 'em coming, Jim!
