This book is a fantastic resource. It's not an erotic read, but it's bound to make your BDSM encounters much more successful. I'd read it carefully and memorize much of its advice- particularly the tips on safety.
Beyond its helpful advice for BDSM sessions, SM 101 also offers some personal touches. We get to hear a bit out the author himself, which lends his advice credence, and we also get a glimpse at the history of the BDSM scene in California's Bay Area. I recommend this book to anyone who's interested in pursuing any form of BDSM-it's just that good.

In contrast to many books on sadomasochism, SM 101 offers an enlightened introduction, complete with safe, easy-to-understand and humorous instructions and ideas. Wiseman's insights into the drives of those who identify as being "into SM" open the doors for many who have kept their desires in the closet to come out and begin to practice in a safe and healthy manner. He allows his readers to benefit from his years of experience, both as a sadomasochist and as a paramedic. THIS BOOK HAS HELPED ME AND MY BOYFRIEND OUT SO MUCH!!! WE ARE BOTH NOVICES AND LIVE "OUT OF THE WAY" FROM MOST CLUBS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. WE FOUND OUT MUCH HELPFUL INFORMATION ON TECHNIQUE AND SAFETY. IT SERVES US LIKE A TEXTBOOK / HOW-TO MANUAL. ANYTIME WE'RE UNSURE SBOUT HOW TO PROCEED, WE JUST LOOK UP THE INFORMATION AND IT'S ALL THERE! I ESPECIALLY ENJOYED THE QUOTES GIVEN ON ALMOST EVERY PAGE FROM THOSE IN THE SM COMMUNITY. Jay Wiseman brings his years of experience to us in this fantastic primer on SM. He covers all the common activities--spanking, flogging, clamps, heat and cold play, bondage, and D/s activity, in a way that will make even the rawest newcomer able to decide what is right for them. His sense of humor helps a lot to demystify what can be a scary world to enter. I can't keep a copy of this book in my house--I'm always loaning it out, and somehow it never seems to come back to me. But two, and give one to a friend.

SM101 is one of the finest books I have ever read regarding the BDSM lifestyle. It is easy to read and goes into nearly every detail from the most basic for novices to the more intricate aspects for the more experienced. There are several related appendices packed with valuable information and where to find more help on subjects of interest not fully covered in this book. So far, it is absolutely the best book I have read for the the general BDSM lifestyle. A MUST read for all people of the BDSM community.
