Book Reviews of Skydog: The Duane Allman StoryBook Review: Excellent and well written Summary: 5 StarsJust finished this book. What a wonderful piece of journalism and illustration of Duane Allman who - despite his amazing talents - is often accidentally overlooked by today's guitar freaks. What I liked most about it is that Poe's writing style flows wonderfully and he has an attention to detail that will appease even the most hardcore fan. Now let's get him working on a Ronnie Van Zant bio!
Book Review: The Slide King Summary: 4 StarsIf your a Duane Allman fan or the Allman Brothers Band fan in general, you'll like this book. A lot of name dropping here, which is good because it gives you a sense of who the players were in his life. The book also gives a good picture of what the music scene was like in the South, which most of the country it seems was unaware of. By their sheer talent, Duane and the ABB showed the rest of the world that Southern music was something to be reckoned with. Duane especially gave dignity to slide playing that until his arrival, critics had considered a primitive form of playing by poor black musicians who didn't have formal music training. Duane said that one of his favorites - B.B. King - mine too, could sing 'Happy Birthday' and still pull the tears out of your eyes. Duane could do that too and also pull the tears of laughter too right out of your eyes.
The reason I only gave the book 4 stars instead of five is in no fault the author's, but that Duane apparently was such a private person that even those close to him really didn't know the true depth of the man. I think the only one who could write the definitive book on Duane would have to be Duane himself and unfortunately that can't happen. I was disappointed that the author didn't sit down individually with members of the ABB for interviews. Most of the interviews were from radio, magazines etc. Having said that, the book overall is well worth the read for those of us who have been fans of Duane and the ABB since the beginning.
Book Review: Wonderful book about a genius, Duane Allman Summary: 5 StarsThis is a great book about, Duane Allman's legendary contributions to the music world. It's very insightful and brings the reader into the day-to-day life situations that Duane and the Brothers, as well as other friends/family/colleagues, faced in their adventures.
Book Review: Fall in Love All Over Again Summary: 5 StarsPoe's book is guaranteed to take you deeper into the original Allman Brothers Band. I enjoyed his descriptions of important songs - sometimes almost note for note. It caused me to listen again to the records I had worn out, but now on CD. It was Duane and ABB that took me, joyously, deeper into the Blues.
