Book Review: Skippyjon Jones is way 5 Stars
I've read through this book several times with my 6 year old son and he never seems to get tired of it. It's a favorite in his first grade class, and he was quick to point out the book to me when we were doing some shopping and spending some of his Christmas money.Skippyjon Jones is a mischevious Siamese kitten with a VERY overactive imaginaton. Grounded to his room, his fancy takes flight and he takes the role of saviour to a group of townsfolk who have been terrorized by a menacing "bumblebeetobandito". Skippyjon saves the day with flair and poise and all is well that ends well.
It's a cute and gentle tale, told with wit and a tongue firmly in cheek. The vivid and cheery illustrations add depth and color to the story, and I think that my son loves the pictures as much as the text.
This is a good book for beginning and intermediate readers. The text flows easily and gives young readers the chance to sound out phonetically similar words and phrases. There are some Spanish words and phrases as well, and these add lingusitic color to the text, especially when Skippyjon imagines himself all the way back to Old Mexico to do battle with his bumbling adversary.
This book has taken a little bit of heat in some of the negative reviews by folks who seem to be concerned of possible cultural stereotyping. I'd say, "rest easy". Skippyjon Jones DOES rely on some pretty broad and well-worn cultural signposts, but I never once got the feeling that anything was done with a sense of malice or bias. The target audience for this book will see nothing more than the fun story of an imaginative kitten having some whimsical adventures.
