Book Reviews of Skinny Bastard: A Kick-in-the-Ass for Real Men Who Want to Stop Being Fat and Start Getting BuffBook Review: Well i'm no Bastard but it did catch my attention Summary: 5 Stars
The title of the book caught my eye at my local bookstore and there was the companion for the male who would be interested in such a book. I personally enjoy reading good self-help/personal growth books and so I thought I'd add this to my list. I'm not overweight at all. I'm pretty fit for my age and proud of my body so I obviously didn't buy this book for the hopes of losing more weight.
My diet? I have been a vegetarian for two years and so when I started to read this book, I would expect to see several references (if not more) of vegetarianism/veganism in it. My choice of this lifestyle was influenced by my will to want to be healthy and conscious of what I was doing to my body.
Looking at the contents of the book, one should be prepared with what this book will talk about. Clearly, it will go into topics that may be quite uncomfortable for example Chapter 4 & 6. I did cringe on a few of the details when the authors quoted people describing a situation in a slaughterhouse. I had seen and heard enough from certain websites detailing about undercover investigations and recording video of these inhumane practices.
That didn't bother me so much as I already had exposure to such material before on the internet. I found myself writing down information that I never heard of before such as the Chapter regarding sugar and certain additives found in foods (Aspartame and Sucralose). This book was rather informational about many things surrounding most products and services of the USA and honestly, I think that's good that the authors wrote them out the way they did.
My personal feelings with this book did not put me in a rage or anger or feelings of resistance. Quite the contrary, I enjoyed the information and especially the way the authors spoke. I laughed plenty at their use of dialogue in such a casual manner. Definitely not my average read lol.
I simply don't understand why there are many people who quickly frown on vegetarianism/veganism or even just mentioning the topic to certain people, you observe their behavior and it just changes. Putting up a big shield, saying "NO! Being vegan will not solve anything and meat is too important to me." Lines like that kind of disturb me actually.
Please keep in mind that I personally don't force this issue down people's throats or just to manipulate someone's diet. The authors in the beginning mention about people and the words they say when words like "giving up meat" or "eating less" are heard. I guess it's really on how you say it to someone. Certain words mean too much to an individual and it may set off alarms in their mind and get defensive about it.
Near the end of the book is a HUGE list of references and sources and not to mention the 300+ footnotes listed in this book. Curiously, PETA wasn't listed there at all. GoVeg is a part of PETA...but the other sites listed there are not. So that tells me that this is not another PETA attempt to turn you into a "good dairy-free person".
I think people nowadays associate vegetarianism, veganism, "don't eat meat", and meatless foods with PETA and there might be the problem. One organization that is known for their extremist and fear-tactic methods to try to "convert" people makes them think that anybody else doing this same method must be "one of them" and should be stayed away from.
There is a lot of truth in this book and most of it I know is real. The truth is a hard pill to swallow and i'm not afraid of going out to find it. So if you are afraid of "too much information" then maybe this book isn't for you after all. To summarize this book, I quote from a sentence the authors had made that stuck in my mind. "You are simply empowered to be able to make educated, controlled choices about what you will and won't put into your body, your temple".
