Book Reviews of Sizzle and Burn (Arcane Society, Book 3)

Book Review: Very enjoyable read!
Summary: 5 Stars

Sizzle and Burn by Jayne Ann Krentz was one of those books that you don't want to put down. Sure it had flaws, but the writing was smooth and flowed well. That is what I like about Jayne Ann Krentz novels the most is that they transition well and you feel very connected to what is going on with the characters. She draws you into the story. Her writing seems so effortless, but you know that it isn't. Everything just flows so well. She is also pretty good about not dumbing the storyline down with lots of casual sex.

Sizzle and Burn hooks you at the beginning with Raine Tallentyre discovering a kidnapped and bound (alive) girl in her aunt's basement. The girl was the next intended victim of the Bonfire Killer. Raine is a level-ten psychic who hears voices of victims and killers in her head and she was drawn to go down to the basement by the voices of the killer. She has come to her aunt's hometown to sell her aunt's house never excepting to be brought into a police investigation into a serial killer. Raine wants to help but the police, but she also wants to stay out of the limelight for fear of being known as a crazy person who hears voices.

Not too soon after this, P.I. Zack Jones comes looking for Raine. He has information for her on her dead father and wants her help with his own investigation into the events leading to her aunt's death. Raine doesn't want to work with Zack, but the attraction is too strong between them, plus she wants to know more about her scientist father and his work. Zack is a level ten psychic as well who can touch an object and get a reading on it and what the person holding it was experiencing at the time. He is instantly attracted to Raine and it doesn't take long for that attraction to reach sizzle and burn proportions. They have a psychic connection that allows them to know when the other is in trouble or in pain.

There are several storylines going on in this story: the one about the Bonfire Killer which is separate and the one about the death of Raine's aunt and how they find out that it was actually a murder. There are many things going on with this book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, not the least of which, is can Raine and Zack overcome their pasts? And can they combine their talents and work together to solve these cases? Great story! 5 stars!!!!

I enjoyed this book very much. The paranormal gives an extra boost to the very human way of setting up levels of power. The very fact of paranormal opens up all kinds of way people show their goodness and badness. The human mind works in wonderous ways.

Summary: 3 Stars

Raine Tallentyre has returned to her hometown, Shelbyville, following the death of her aunt. Shelbyville is a hot bed of secrets and murder. While preparing her aunt's home for sale, Raine who has the psychic talent of "hearing voices" discovers the latest victim of the infamous serial killer, the Bonfire Killer, still alive. Sent by the super secret paranormal agency, the Arcane Society, Zach Jones (who can touch items/objects and sense things) has been asked to investigate the events reported in the town and determine if they are related to an infamous potion that is believed to enhance psychic abilities, with a few nasty side affects like "insanity". Also, Zach must determine how dangerous the alter-agency, known as Nightshade is, and if they are behind the manufacturing of the unstable drug (apparently psychics not only have enhanced capabilities, but soon become addicted and are driven insane if they stop taking it suddenly). And it should be no surprise to the reader when Raine and Zach are on a collision course to danger and desire. There are several underlying plots in the story, for example, Raine's fathers creation of the potion; Raine's friend who wants to make a name for himself by solving cold cases using her talent; her rejection by a group that "fears" her and her family history and her aunt who suffered from a breakdown as a result of her psychic gifts...all of which culminate into a decent story that includes romance, intrigue and mystery.

Book Review: Tried and Tired
Summary: 2 Stars

Well, I generally like books by Jane Ann Krentz(Amanda Quick), but I have to agree with the Publisher's Weekly review that this fell flat. It's the same old tried and tired romantic formula. The romance itself seemed to be more about lust than actual love. Which is fine, if you're looking for some soft porn.

Also, I listened to this story, on audio CD, at work and was very disappointed by the Narrator. Her voice and inflections were weak and annoying; like nails on a chalkboard. I hope they pick a better narrator next time.

The story itself had some surprising elements, but overall was predictable. I think the author was going for something fast-paced and in the process left out alot of the detail and emotion that helps the reader connect to the characters and the story itself. Finally, even though the characters had paranormal abilities, I did not find them exciting, unique, funny or even interesting. But, maybe alot of that had to do with the audiobook narrator..?

But, like I said, there are a few of her books that I've enjoyed before, so I give this 2 stars.
