Book Reviews of Sink Reflections

Book Review: It isn't JUST about CLUTTER!
Summary: 5 Stars

I suspect there'll be hundreds of reviews coming in -- as Marla/FlyLady's 200,000 subscribers respond to "Wish I Had Saved My Money".

I bought the book long after I'd subscribed to FlyLady's mailing list -- and the book truly reinforces what you learn from the reminders, Marla's written-on-the-treadmill essays (musings), the Testimonials, and the website's helpful hints.

I joined to learn to be a much better housewife -- instead, I learned to stop whining, and just DO IT!

And I learned that even with serious illness and almost NO ENERGY at all, in the midst of grief and trouble -- I COULD live in peace.

For me, I give thanks every day that I found the web site -- and the Book -- a year BEFORE my husband died. Our last year together was almost our best year together, despite "all of the above". My "Dear Husband" enjoyed Marla's essays (read aloud by me, in my best oratorical style!), -- and loved our peaceful home even better.

For someone who isn't Born Organized, who is living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) -- who is buried in clutter (or whose family IS) -- this book is a lifesaver.

So is .........

It's not for everybody -- Born Organized people don't need it unless they have to teach their NOT-Born-Organized children. Clutterers who are living in denial AND CHAOS -- when you're ready for a teaching -- the Teacher will come. READ THIS BOOK -- and start doing things, 15 minutes at a time. Living in Peace is wonderful!

Book Review: Why is Flylady's advice so hard for people to understand?
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes, I am a Flybaby, so Marla's book and website have been very helpful to me. She made it clear on her site that the book contains most (if not all) of the basic information on her website about setting up zones, Morning and Evening routines and FLYing or "Finally Loving Yourself." The book is intended for those who might not have access to a computer or just want to feel something real in their hands as they begin to try to organize their lives and homes. I would like to reccomend both the book and website, for college students who are having a hard time being away from home and the routines of high school for the first time.

What amazes me about the critiques of Flylady's plan, is that her instructions aren't hard! It is simple to clean a room for 15 minutes, do some reading for 15 minutes and do a chore for 15 minutes. The process of developing your routines take time, but it isn't revolutionary. Marla's "ideas" are similar to those of AA, or other self-help groups, where to change destructive behavior you develop different routines. I am not comparing disorganization and lack of focus to alcoholism, but our lives are built around routines. Look around your home, school-life, or work-life--there are so many routines we have which often jeapordize our goals. Read her website or her book, and she will guide you in recognizing what routines are and aren't working, and the FlyTools, by which to change them.

Book Review: It works
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using this system for almost three years now and it has proven itself through two moves and going from working to being a SAHM. Use what you need, ignore the rest. Have an open mind and you'll see the tools she gives you apply to home, work, hobby, almost anything. It starts with loving yourself and realizing YOU deserve to live in a clean house, regardless of who else lives with you. It helps you establish good habits and gives a framework for living your life. And realize that if you get behind in your cluttered, disorganized life, it's ok - just jump in where you are. You can do anything for 15 minutes. It's true!

Marla is a sweet woman with a huge heart. She's not a drill sergeant, your life will not be scheduled from morning to night with cleaning tasks. Again, it's a framework for taking care of your home, but more importantly, loving yourself enough. If that sounds strange, you'll have to read the book to learn more. It took a couple of months for me to see how they related but once it clicked the entire system made complete sense. I am proud of the person I am and the house that I keep and all the good things that follow from that. I have time in my life for the people and hobbies that I love and I'm don't feel guilty about household chores (they're done) and I don't waste time on insignificant tasks/things.

Give the book a chance and it just may well be the tool you need.

Book Review: Ready for My Second Copy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been a member of FlyLady since early 2000. When I first found her, my home was a dump and I was severely depressed. I used Flylady to change my life. So, when this book first came out, I thought: Why Should I Buy This Book? I Don't Need It! After all, my control journal was made, blah blah blah. However, I found that this book is a compilation of the best of FlyLady -- a wonderful, portable version of FlyLady's system! Because it is a book, I don't need to be glued to the computer to benefit from Flylady - I can use my copy of the book to fill those lost moments in the day usually spent waiting for something or someone. Reading it keeps Marla's encouragements forefront in my mind, "You are not behind!" "You can do anything for 15 minutes" "Housework done incorrectly still blesses my home". Regarding format, one of the things that I like about this book is that testimonials are in boxes, which means that I can skip the ones that I am tired of or that don't interest me, allowing me to focus on the meat of the book, which is considerable. My copy is now so dog-eared that I really need to get a new one! The greatest thing about the book form is that you do not need internet access to benefit from the life strategies taught by Marla Cilley (FlyLady). The focus of this book is feeling good about your home and life, taking care of yourself and doing it all without stress or guilt. I highly recommend this book!

Book Review: This is THE BEST
Summary: 5 Stars

I have really struggled with clutter. When we were married and my husband was deployed, in the apartment I had a narrow walkway from the door to the bedroom, and I kept stacking the dirty dishes to make room for more, everything else was lined with clutter. When we moved to a four bedroom home, one room and two closets were so filled, we could never use the stuff. Now, we are divorced, and I had a two bedroom apartment stuffed with boxes from the four bedroom home. Again with the walkways. I checked this book out from the library, kept re-reading the parts about what clutter does to our lives, then my former in-laws came to visit and I was mortified to admit, face to face, how I am raising our daughter in this mess. There it was, thrown open, no hiding, how I am living. So, I put the book in action, and with our daughter's help, within three days, the living room and kitchen were clean and clear. Now, we may sit down! And I may find the pet supplies, tools, towels, markers, shoes, and coats, right where they ought to be, right when I need them. It is so nice, and like Martha Cilley says, peaceful at home. I make a goal for this summer to clear the last untamed terrain of my own bedroom. All boxes, just a walkway. I have 6 weeks. Martha Cilley tells of a room she cleaned by giving away, throwing away, or putting away two items per day, until. I HIGHLY recommend "Sink Reflections".
