Book Reviews of Sink Reflections

Book Review: Anyone can benefit from FlyLady!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've recently read Sink Reflections and give it a standing ovation!
Some who have read the book complain that it's "too religious" - well, I don't happen to be a religious person but I still thank the FlyLady for all she's done in helping me to declutter and keep our home picked-up and clean. I think anyone can pick up valuable lessons from this book regardless of when or how they earn their living. Oh sure, there are lots of people out there who'll make excuses, "oh, I work 2 shifts in a row every other day of the week" etc; but the truth is that FlyLady's pattern of routines can be incorporated into anyone's schedule with a little ingenuity. What I've come to learn over the years is that it's often those with the dirtiest, sloppiest homes who come up with the biggest number of excuses as to why they can't find a solution that works - - that's how they got into and STAY in the mess that they're in!
From week #1, following FlyLady's steps and routines began to lift a terrible burden from me and my family. Prior to that, weekly housecleaning had been a horrible exercise that felt like forced labor. The CHAOS or, Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome, fit us like a glove and planned company was often accompanied by frantic days of backbreaking marathons of scrambling to jam clutter any place out of sight and then rushing to clean the rest of the house with often only minutes to spare before our guests arrived at our front door. We don't do that anymore. Our home is generally very clean now and frequently immaculate - I don't hesitate to invite any of my neighbors in at a moment's notice.

To FlyLady and her helpers - - a HUGE Thank-You!

J. Lloyd

Book Review: Finding balance; not perfectionism.
Summary: 5 Stars

As a woman educated in health education, nursing and adult education, you would think I would have all the information I needed to live a healthy life and be a perfect wife and mother.
But, that wasn't so! I pushed too hard to "have it all"; and have really neglected myself.

I became a Flybaby about a year after my husband's death. The emotional impact of his sudden death was compounded by the fact that he had been a packrat. My house was a cave.

Another person recommended that I try the Flylady way of doing things for just 2 months. She suggested that I did not have to do every little thing, but just try what I could and then see if there's any change! Yes! There was! And I work outside the home and had to modify things to fit my lifestyle and energy (or lack of energy due to depression).

And so I think I am flying. FLY=finally loving yourself. I am beginning to take care of me and my home. Also, the principles have spilled into my job as a nurse educator.

The perspective to use when you read the book and go on to the website is that you will be involved in setting up a personal behavioral management plan. You will release perfectionism and became more efficient in getting things done. You will have more energy; more fun time. All of this is so far away from the Stepford wife comment of the TX reader! All I can figure is that reader didn't read enough or try it. This concept is not about a mandate to "please your man" and be perfect; but to take care of yourself and your life---no matter who is (or isn't) in it! It's your life..take care of yourself and fly!

Book Review: This book has changed my life!
Summary: 5 Stars

Marla Cilley's book has helped me in all areas of my life. The simple foundation ideas of getting routines going, doing things now, and decluttering your home, your body, and your mind are great, but the thing that really makes this program work where others don't is Marla's (Flylady's) wonderful spirit. She has been where many of us are now; trying to get our lives and homes in order, but overwhelmed and not sure where to start, so she knows just what we need to hear to encourage us to get moving. Her sayings and catchphrases may seem cutesy at first, but after only a week I started to use those phrases happily - they are descriptive and make me smile. Marla's cheery attitude is evident in each one.
This system has not only helped me at home, but has also helped me at work. I am making much more money this year than I did last year; I have implemented her routines at each of my jobs, and knowing that I am consistant and do things well every day has made me confident enough to raise my rates and look for more interesting jobs.
The last reviewer commented that this book was for Stepford Wives. Let me tell you, as a 28 year old feminist, bisexual, agnostic, Libertarian, purple-haired, activist of a landscaper, that this program is for *anyone* who needs some help getting their life into order. Wanting to gain control over your life and home does not make you a Stepford Wife, thank you very much.
This is a great addition to any library, but please use it in conjunction with the emails. The book has the basics, but Flylady's emails and spirit are what makes this program soar.

Book Review: baby steps did it
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me tell you that I didn't believe in anything of this when I first joined the e-mail list. Somebody had mentioend it to me and I just wanted to give it a try, but shining the sink as the first step to happiness sounded a bit weird. Strangely though it worked. I didn't feel as overwhelmed as I used to when buying some book on getting organized and wondering how in the world I would be able to do everything that was mentioned. (Some of the books were wonderful to read, but I just couldn't integrate them into my life.) No, it all started with small steps, and shining the sink in the evening actually made me chuckle about this little secret nobody in my family knew about. Some weeks later even my husband noticed that some things had changed, that the kitchen seemed tidier, that I seemed to do more things than I had been doing, etc. Well, our house isn't perfect and never will be, but anybody can come in any minute now and I'm not embarrassed, I usually know exactly where things are, and I developed some routines that really help me doing things without even thinking about them. Even the time I spend surfing on the internet has greatly diminished, because I seem to be managing my time much better now and thus have time for things I'm really interrested in, like learning a musical instrument... To put it short, if you're one of those people who are afraid they never will get to that point of being organized, or feeling comfortable in their home, buy this book, or alternatively, subscribe to that e-mail list, because it's doable. I did it - you can do it, too.

Book Review: Some People Don't Get It
Summary: 5 Stars

I have this book and absolutely love it! I use it daily. It has helped to me to change my outlook about my house & more importantly about me! It is a fabulous system. My house is nowhere near where I want it to be, but it is getting there - every day! It is certainly light years better than it was before! I am no longer embarrassed by surprise visits and feel comfortable inviting people into my home.

Some people don't get it and that is OK. Every system is not for every person. The book is not about cleaning. Yes, it gives wonderful helpful hints and how-to's but the book is about making a change in your home. Cleaning (or rather not cleaning) is a symptom, not the problem. There are so many helpful hints and basic tips, but you can choose which ones you need to do and which ones don't apply to you. Just because they are written in a book doesn't mean you have to do them. FlyLady herself tells you that. As for wearing shoes in the house, I wasn't a big fan of this at first, but now I like it. I am ready to go on a moment's notice. I don't have to stop working to put shoes on to remove trash or donations from the house. My feet and legs actually feel better as well. As for the "gushy religious overtones" that one reviewer refers to, I think they are a breath of fresh air in a world that desperately needs to be reminded of what matters most!! I welcome her "religious overtones" and God Bless Her for standing strong in her faith and reflecting that in her book (& God bless her for helping so many people)!
