Book Reviews of Sink Reflections

Book Review: It's a wonderfull plan, and has helped me tremendously
Summary: 5 Stars

I would also like to write a note about the "religious agenda" that one reviewer here mentioned. Yes, Flylady does mention God, and religious phrases in places, but I can hardly say this book has a religious agenda. I'm a pagan as well(so would in no way be out to further any 'religious agenda' of Flylady's), and have been a member of Flylady's helping list for a long time. Anything she has to say of a religious nature in relation to cleaning is something that is meant in a sincerly helpfull way. There are times I will think of her 'God breezes' as 'Goddess breses' or 'Frigga(norse goddess, patron of home and hearth) breses' ;-) But yes, you can tell Marla is a Christian, and that her beliefs are enmeshed with her life, but hey! I'm a pagan, and my beliefs are enmeshed with my life and I can find the same kinds of messages from my religion!

Anyway, This book is a compilation of the e-mails and website material. I think it's a wonderfull thing to have around if you're like me and getting on the computer to check your e-mail is something that really puts a hold on your progress. It's also easier to find needed information in the book rather than the website.

I'm nowhere near perfect at keeping house, but always making progress!! I have decluttered over 1,000 lbs of STUFF and clutter since starting the flylady program and I don't miss any of it! I don't feel guilty about keeping the things that are precious to me because those things are now nicely displayed/framed, and they bring more joy to my life now that all the other stuff isn't getting in the way.

The Flylady program has made life much better for me and my family. :-)

I would also like to reccomend 'Home Comforts: The art and science of keeping house which is a very in-depth book with a lot of information about cleaning things, washing things, and our outlook on our homes.

Book Review: Put Your Home in Order and Turn Your Life Around
Summary: 5 Stars

For some people, this may be yet another book that they buy in hopes of finding some miracle solution for helping them clean their messy homes. But unless you put the suggested routines in place and actually get off your "franny" and do something, this book will not be the cure. However, if you are truly ready to learn to love your home and yourself, this book is for you.

What I loved about Sink Reflections was the fact that it seemed like Marla Cilley was talking directly to me. She doesn't berate the reader for being a slob, but instead explains how the perfectionism that some of us strive for actually stands in the way of our progress. We have to learn to take "baby steps" and do a little bit at a time and be happy with our progress, even if it is slow.

Although some of the suggestions, like always wearing lace-up shoes, and shining your sink may seem silly and pointless, once you begin doing this, you will see how much of a difference these things make.

One of the biggest helps I found in the book was the concept of decluttering. I have always been a pack rat, saving things I might be able to use someday or feeling like I had to hold onto stuff because I spent money on it. The FlyLady system inspired me to get rid of so much stuff that it has been easier to keep the house much cleaner just by donating or throwing away items I no longer loved or needed.

And finally, the biggest thing that the FlyLady teaches us in Sink Reflections is that it's all about your attitude. You have to believe that you are worth it and that you want and deserve a clean and happy home. It's amazing how all the other chaos in your life (finances, scheduling, relationships) also begin to fall into place, just by applying some of the principles found in this book.

Get the book. Read it. And then begin your flight. You won't be disappointed.

Book Review: Not for Everyone, Just The Disorganized, Frazzled, and Me!
Summary: 5 Stars

If I could give FlyLady and Marla Cilley 10 stars, I would.

Unlike a few Negative Nellie reviewers, I wasn't born organized (BO to us FlyBabies). For anyone who is always organized or already does their cleaning automatically--why did they buy this book? This book is for people who can't seem to do it on their own, for whatever reason.

I have recently been diagnosed with Adult ADD. It wasn't a problem until I had kids. I'd just do massive cleaning sessions doing my whole house in one night on Saturday night or whenever the mood struck me... right down to scrubbing the bathroom till I could see my reflection in the shower stall.

What FlyLady's routines have done for me is give me a system to break down those marathons and remember to do little bits at a time. I'm not lazy or messy on purpose, I simply lacked the proper focus and organization. I was a binge and purge cleaner, and it's no surprise that's how the rest of my life was too.

Contrary to some other reviews I've read, it's not about being "clean clean clean" all the time. It's about getting yourself to the point where you spend very little conscious effort cleaning. FlyLady doesn't WANT us to spend all Saturday dusting everything in the house like our mothers (or in my case, sister) did. We clean little bits here and there so the dust isn't there to begin with. We "vacuum the middles" and don't get down and along the baseboards every time. That's because our little bits here and there keep the dirt from ever creeping to the baseboards.

And if that's how clean your house is all the time, don't buy this book. You don't need it. But if you find yourself shoving things out of sight and frantically begging for an extra 5 minutes every time a last-minute visitor is set to arrive, you need Sink Reflections and FlyLady.

Book Review: Another FlyLady fan
Summary: 5 Stars

I heard about FlyLady online a year or so ago. I had recently bought a house with my fiance, and I was having trouble keeping it tidy. Even though we have no children, we DO have four pets and both work full time, so things were sort of going to pot. I signed up for her online reminders, read the Web site and then bought the book. (I like reading books better than I do Web pages!)

I think this system is amazing. FlyLady is very encouraging (though some might find her a bit saccharin) and keeps you from feeling overwhelmed with her reminders to "take babysteps." She concentrates on developing morning, afternoon and evening routines that help you keep you on track. (For example, my evening routine consists of running the dishwasher, feeding the pets, laying out an outfit for the next day,

She also divides your house up into "zones" -- groups of one to three rooms. Every day, you clean in your zone for 15 minutes and do one zone mission that she sends out via e-mail or posts on her Web site. These are usually something very easy, like "sweep your front porch." There is one "home blessing hour" a week, where you dust and vacuum your house. (As she says, "It doesn't have to be perfect!") My husband has allergies, so I need to do a little more in-depth cleaning; I clean one room a day instead of all the rooms at once.

The beauty of this system is that it is flexible. FlyLady has many testimonials on her Web site that include advice for FlyBabies who work outside the home, who have large families, who are pregnant, who homeschool, etc.

As for the reviewer who said FlyLady sends scathing e-mails to those who disagree with her, I have never heard of such a thing. I've been on her list for quite some time and have never seen a rude or unkind e-mail.

Book Review: Not a Stepford Wife Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I follow the system Marla lays out in this book and I'm no Stepford Wife. I'm a full time school teacher and bring work home with me. My house is neat, and I have more free time than when my house was a mess. One reviewer stated that there was "irreducible time" for doing housework. True, but I spend 3 minutes doing my only bathroom that the whole family uses, and it looks great. I don't do housework on weekends, get all my errands and housework done during the week, take classes for my master's degree, and still have time to relax. As a matter of fact, this system saves me so much time and money and helps me stay in such a positive mood that I'm beginning to plan how I'm gong to accomplish something I've always wanted to do and didn't have the time or money for--I'm going to learn to fly a plane! (Stepford Wives don't fly planes!)
Now, Marla isn't any Shakespeare, but that's not why you would buy this book. Shakespeare is wonderful, but he doesn't tell you how to find peace and be organized. Marla does, and she knows whereof she speaks. After all, she's helping you find peace, not trying to write the Great American Novel. Take it for what it is--a great way to be more organized so you have more time to read those great works of fiction.
By the way. Her system helped me become so organized that my husband and i can leave for a great 3 day get away now with just 15 minutes notice. That's because now, everythings clean, ready, and put where it should be. We just got back from 3 days camping and mountain biking--we packed,.loaded the bikes, notified the kids and neighbors and left in 15 minutes (Another non Stepford activity!) Marla helped me organize my life so I can HAVE a life! Thanks, Marla
