Book Reviews of Singing for the Stars: A Complete Program for Training Your Voice (Book & 2 CD's)Book Review: In Defense of Seth Riggs, Not That He Needs It Summary: 5 Stars
I'd like to add my endorsement of the Seth Riggs system of vocal instruction to the many other sincere reviewers who are unfortunately being slammed and maligned by a handful of "Judy Davis" devotees. FYI, sadly Judy Davis passed away, she lived to the ripe old age of eighty-something, and to my knowledge left no literature or instructional recordings behind. Additionally, I and the vast majority of today's pop and rock singers aren't aspiring to the styles and sounds of her students - such as Sinatra and Judy Garland - great crooners though they were.
Like it or not, whether you prefer to sing opera (which I personally don't...) or do your vocalizing in one of today's massively lucrative popular music genres such as rock, pop, soul or Broadway, Seth Riggs is the single most important vocal coach of our generation__and his influence, reputation and importance aren't questioned by anyone seriously informed and conversant in this area. Riggs is well-known as Michael Jackson's personal vocal coach. I wonder if the number one pop entertainer of all time would have asked Seth to leave the Thriller recording studio sessions had he learned from one silly Judy Davis-worshipping reviewer, that Riggs had been "unethical" in claiming Barbara Streisand as his student when according to this non-authority, he had taught Ms. Streisand for "less than a year." The fact that Streisand's photo appears proudly on Rigg's personal web-site (click the "clients" button) obviously with her permission and personal blessing, probably wouldn't interest this gentleman.
Mr. Rigg's pioneering technique of speech-level singing has been of immense help to me personally. I've been a professional pop singer for over 20 years, and it is because of the Riggs system that I've been able to eliminate weaknesses in my vocal range and built a degree of strength and endurance I once would have thought impossible. I've also said goodbye to most of the throat and breathing problems I've experienced chronically through the years as a result of flaws in my singing technique.
To be fair, this book with its two CDs is probably not for everyone. There isn't a huge amount of material within its pages, but makes up for this by offering very high quality over quantity. If you are looking for extremely detailed, pedantic explanations, very very slow practice tempi for your exercises, or the exact position to hold your body while scaring away the neighbors' pets during a rendition of a Rossini Aria in your shower, you might be better off contacting that dude who wrote one of the more supercilious Davis-worshipping "reviews" of this book, so you can trash today's popular culture together. Not surprisingly, this same individual is turned off by the testimonials of Seth Riggs' vocal clients, an amazing "who's-who" of the most popular singers of our generation, which does admittedly take up quite a few of the book's pages. The fact that Seth Riggs would have the BALDFACED AUDACITY to proudly list his roster of all-star clients in HIS OWN BOOK...?! *gasp* *shriek*...!?, along with their endorsements of his speech-level singing techniques gets under this guy's skin like a ravenous infestation of ticks as he chooses the cranky-pants word "propaganda" to characterize them. (Is this hack "reviewer" just a little bit jealous of the world's most sought-after vocal coach? Riggs apparently is approached by around 1,000 new students per year with no advertising, his breathtakingly-expensive hourly rates notwithstanding.)
But back to the book... If you are motivated, intelligent, and can follow instructions, you will surely reap many benefits by working your way patiently through the exercises of this system and practicing them diligently and consistently. The goal of the Riggs system is to build a "head voice" which embodies the ease, strength and textural possibilities of the "chest voice." When your "bridges" are working properly (the notes of your range which transition from one "voice" into another) and you are capable of "mixing" the chest and head voices, you are well on your way to an understanding of the Riggs technique. In the book's first exercises, you will "sing" by holding your fingertips to your cheeks. You will be "bubbling" notes forth from your lips, which will force you to generate your sound correctly, keeping your soft palate down. With this technique, you will be physically unable to sing from incorrect areas which are prone to cause tension and even injury to the vocal instrument. Let's not forget, this is only a book with some CDs. There is only so much one might expect to accomplish using a book and CDs alone. Many people prefer one-on-one lessons with a talented vocal coach. There are many out there who teach the Riggs system, and a wide variety of other approaches to vocalizing.
Again, Seth Riggs isn't for everyone. I would imagine that absolute beginners and non-adventurous types would find the exercises a bit strange and off-putting. Find a teacher you like, preferably someone who has the type of voice you'd like to emulate, and enjoy the journey as you learn to sing with power, technique and confidence! I hope I get a chance to hear you one day.
