Book Review: A great book for beginners

I just bought a sewing machine and was confused as to what book to buy first. Some of the reviews made me hesitate in buying this book. I flipped through it at a fabric store and it was just what I needed. If you already know how to sew (take measurements, choose and cut out patterns ect) this book will not be useful to you. There is alot of techniques this book does not cover, but it is for those who are just starting out. The author compares learning to sew to learning to cook. You don't start wiht the most difficult recipes and you don't start with the most difficult patterns and techniques. I was overwhelmed and didn't have anyone to guide me and this book held my hand and walked me through step by step. I am now able to expand on what I have learned and pick a few books up that include more advanced techniques.
