Book Reviews of She's Not There: A Life in Two GendersBook Review: Making light of a very serious issue Summary: 3 Stars
Home and family are supposed to spell comfort and security. What happens when the edifice comes tumbling down all around you, making those whom you trusted and who, in turn, placed their trust in you question it all?
Finney skims lightly over the issues that are at the core of making his/ her life changing decision. Her blithe writing style makes no effort to capture the horrendous, gut wrenching pain and self-doubt his/her nearest and dearest must have endured when Finney decided to own upto his true inner identity. What makes his/ her narrative so unsympathetic to me is reading that Finney was aware, from a young age that "he" was meant to be a "she". Surely, any considerate romantic partner brings this up prior to the nuptials?
If any good is to come out of this book, it is hopefully the awareness that someone whom you consider you know, someone otherwise dependable, articulate and professionally successful could harbor such a secret deep within.
Book Review: Great Education Summary: 3 Stars
I picked this book up from the library as a throw out, but it ended up being an education. As a fan of Middlesex, this book gave another view into the transgender world. Really who does not want to know more about all types of alternatives. I love to read more about the more risque part of sex, such as BDSM, but this topic presented itself and really humanized the subject. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to know the real stuggles that a transgendered person goes through on their journey towards "transition".
Book Review: Hard to Follow Summary: 2 Stars
While I appreciate the courage it must have taken the author to write this story of her life I found this book difficult to follow. It jumps around in time which in this particular case made it difficult for me to really gain a sense of what the author's journey entailed. If you are looking for a book that reads like a story versus an informative resource on transgendered individuals then this might be for you. Personally I was hoping for more of the latter.
Book Review: Provactive, Beautiful, and educational Summary: 2 Stars
This book is simply amazing. I loved it. It is exquisitely provactive and moving. Jenny keeps me laughing with her talented and humorous writing. I couldn't get enough. I learned so much about changing genders, family, and my own views and oppinions. This is a must read.
