Anyone finishing the Sharpe series goes into mourning that there are no more to read. Anger, denial, bargaining, etc.
So I was quite delighted when my wife found this one for me - a short story, but really a Sharpe novel with all the elements, highly condensed.
Sharpe and his men are assigned to guard a bridge well behind the lines in Spain for a few days. It's quiet and peaceful, there aren't any French for a hundred miles and no one expects any trouble - except Sharpe, who just has this feeling that he can't shake. And we all know what that means.
It's all here: Sharpe and his heavy cavalry sword, screaming "Kill the bastards", Harper and his seven-barreled shotgun, jolly Harry Price flirting with Teresa, "La Aguja", who's here too. And all the French cavalry in the world are riding down upon them ... It's all you want in a Sharpe novel, except about 200 pages too short!

It is the summer of 1812 and Richard Sharpe, newly recovered from the wound he received in the fighting at Salamanca, is given an easy duty; to guard a Commissary Officer posted to an obscure Spanish fort where there are some captured French muskets to repair. But unknown to the British, the French are planning a lightning raid across the River Tormes, and they reckon the obscure Spanish fort, which guards an ancient bridge across the river, will be lightly guarded.
