Book Review: Great Book for ALL Children

We have had this book in our home for some time. We love it. As the mother of multicultural children, I am not at all offended by this book. The idea that this book promotes the one-drop rule is ridiculous. Logic tells us that a person can be a member of one group, not to the exclusion of all others. My children are Black and yet members of other groups. This book teaches them that although they may not look like Mommy or Daddy or even their grandparents, they can still fell comfortable saying that they are Black. This book has helped them to feel more comfortable with themselves and their differences from their friends. So much so that my oldest son no longer worries about what to say to his friends who ask why his dad is white or why his skin is darker than his little brother's. He simplies says, "All families don't look the same. And all Black people don't have to either."
The language used in this book is clear and easy for young child to grasp and follow. The pictures are bright and colorful. And the method of comparing the various treats and objects used for each of the different shades is just fantastic.
Race is nothing more than a social construction. It's not based on reason or a clear and static set of rules. Those who expect a children's book to cover all of the intricate details and nuances associated with discussions of race are really asking a lot. But if you would like to expose your children to a general idea of the diversity that exists within the "Black" race - which the children in this book must identify as, otherwise their parents most likely wouldn't have allowed them to participate - then this is a great book.
