Book Reviews of Sex, Lies And Politics: The Naked TruthBook Review: Innuendo or Essential Info? Summary: 5 Stars
Had anyone but a nationally known pornographer written this incredibly important book - it might have received the attention it deserved and by which a bit more of our future might, perhaps, have been salvaged. Progressives have a difficult time accepting Flynt's voice as part of their choir - because of how he makes his money. One has only to recall Amy Goodman's stammering interview in the Summer of 2004 - feminists of all stripes, genders, and/or orientations are uncomfortable with the man. And the principles of feminism are unequivically among those of progressive thought and touchstones of justification.
This situation has allowed the political right to easily quash and/or dismiss much of Flynt's important investigative work without much public notice (notable exception: the exposure of Clinton impeachment mastermind Bob Barr's extramaital hijinks. In the case of the information revealed in this book, however, the dismissal was particularly significant.
In the section entitled "A Different Kind of Gag Rule", Flynt tells us about one of the events that might have really motivated G.W. Bush to go AWOL for a spell back in the hazy years of the early 1970's.
"She said that she had been in the room when this boyfriend of hers . . . took a call from a very agitated W. The way she told the story, young Bush was in a panic because he'd gotten his girl knocked up . . . She gave us the name of the hospital where the procedure supposedly took place; she even gave us the name of the doctor who supposedly performed it. . .
Now if this story was true, I thought it was something the American people ought to know about. After all, here was this ultraconservative, anti-abortion governer of Texas running for President as a "family values" candidate. The abortion, if it occured, was carried out before Roe vs Wade made the procedure legal." The upshot of the story is documented. Yes. And, then, yes, again. Yes: the story panned out as true. Flynt's team found the doctor, found the girl - and yes - no solid evidence - only testimonies. And yes - not even the supposedly most open sources on the mainstream would touch the one story that could have prevented the election of G.W. Bush. And a mere 4 years later, au revoir Dan Rather . . .
Sort of a post mortem read, but engossing, and for 1 cent on Amazon - great deal!
