Book Reviews of Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph

Book Review: Amazing History amzingly written
Summary: 5 Stars

The core of this book is very straightforward. Lawrence inveigls the Arabian tribes to rise against the Turks, he helps them to unite and helps them to become capable military units, leading them to ultimate victory.
Th book casts an unsparing eye on the beauty of the desert and the ugliness but necessity of war, even delving into deepest traumata like the homosexual rape. It also impresses by not being condescending, by giving each and everyone his proper dues.
The writing is excellent, the story gripping yet the text so dense that one should read it twice, once as a good yarn and a second time as a book on Arabian history, which also helps to understand todays Arabian countries better than many newspaper articles.
Read this book!

Book Review: You must read this.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an epic account of the role he played in Arabia during WWI which subsequently spawned the film (good, but not half so good as the book) 'Lawrence of Arabia'. A fascinating and highly intelligent account, which charts how he helped (some would say he was crucial, though he would deny it) to stir up a major rebellion against the Turks, forging to achieve this powerful nationalist sentiments which have yet to recede fully. Some people might think it goes on somewhat too long, but really there's nothing there which I wouldn't have wanted to read, and I would sincerely recommend this for just about anyone. The detailed character portrayals, intense self-analysis and involved schemes described here are worth their weight in gold.

Book Review: Most remakable first person history ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Lawrence's Seven Pillars is a triumph in many ways. For the British Army, the Arab tribes, and a personal triumph unequaled in modern history. Even the writing is a triumph in its poetry and accomplishment. The story goes that post WWI Lawrence wrote (by hand) the manuscript for Seven Pillars of Wisdom then LOST it! He had to re-write this entire volume. Perhaps that added to the final masterpiece.

I have read Seven Pillars in three different editions. If you want to be caught up in the turmoil of the events that formed modern the day Middle East as told by the man who was at the center of it read the story of Lawrence of Arabia.

Book Review: I've only read it twice - dynamite!
Summary: 5 Stars

Whatever the truth of his account, (see the numerous Lawrence biographies - the more critical the better) this book is brilliantly worded.

An orchestra of prose produced by a sharp English mind. The text is so poised, sharp and simply pulls you into Lawrences analysis of affiars stressing his judgement and also his regal vanity.

One of the most powerful reads of the 20th C. The English is hard to beat - a wonder of prose. If you like that style, try T. E. Lawrence's translation of the Odyssey as well.

I wish I could memorise much of this book - a controlled explosive account.

Book Review: I have carried this book with me during my tours in Iraq
Summary: 5 Stars

SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM is a wonderfully written book that is joys to read for everyone weather you are a historian, diplomat or soldier. I lost my first copy of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and bought this edition as a replacement. It is soiled and stained but still my favorite. I always find a thought or phrase to assist me in my work because it is a story of war told by a soldier whose main weapon is his intellect.

I recommend that before you read it for the first time read Charles Doughty's Travels in Arabia Deserta.
