Book Reviews of See the City (Rookie Readers Level A)

Book Review: A Better `Pretend' Reader than Primer - a review of "See the City"
Summary: 3 Stars

This would be a good book to read with a child who doesn't read because there is a constant refrain of `See the city' which a small child could pretend to be reading.

For older children I think this book would just be a bore (at least after the first read-thru). There isn't any storyline and really the entire book consists of pointing out aspects of city life that may or may not exist where your child lives.

I mean the author points out sidewalks, an ice skating rink, ships in a harbor, and sparkling lights and such.

There are about 18 words some of which are not commonly introduced in introductory readers. Words such as: cement, dancing, ice-skating, sidewalks, sparkling, and stage. But here is an example of text so you can judge for yourself:

Ice-skating in the park.
See the city.
Ships on the sea.
See the city.

[Note the refrain. If an adult were to read the `hard' stuff then even a really young child could run their fingers over the words and pretend to be reading. (Think of it as practice).]

Three Stars. Cute artwork by Cindy Revell. Good book for `practicing' reading with a non-reader. I would NOT buy the book for older children.

Summary of See the City (Rookie Readers Level A)

A boy and his family enjoy the sights of New York City, from cement sidewalks and ice skaters in the park to sparkling lights and dancing on a stage.
