Book Reviews of See Me After Class: Advice for Teachers by Teachers

Book Review: Give it to Every Teacher You Know!
Summary: 5 Stars

A teacher-friend recently told me that when she tells people she's a teacher they light up with big eyes and ask, "Do you love it?" As dedicated as this friend is to her students and teaching, her eyes don't quite light up that way when she talks about teaching. Why? See Me After Class will tell you. Do you know someone who always wanted to be a teacher, had it in him/her, and just got wiped out in the first couple years of teaching, with everyone wondering what happened? Teaching is one of the most important professions and we all agree that we want good teachers and good schools, right? But how do we get there? Start by reading See Me After Class. It will give teachers priceless pieces of wisdom and advice not found in any manual and the confidence that this piece of wisdom comes from other teachers who have experienced the same challenges. It will give non-teachers the empathy for teachers' experiences and the knowledge that excellent teachers are in our schools, sometimes hidden behind frustration and exhaustion, and needing enhanced support and resources for their excellence to be manifested.

Ms. Elden's book will transform classrooms everywhere as teachers read it. See Me After Class should be required reading for all teacher training programs and should be sitting out in every teachers' lounge. It's a book that once opened, will be read cover-to-cover, even by non-teachers like myself. I found Ms. Elden's collection of advice relevant even for non-formal education situations I have taught in. See Me After Class is captivating, hilarious, and "inspiring," though I think that word might be somewhat overused in education literature. Ms. Elden recognizes the humanity in teachers and students, that students will not fit into the molds education manuals write for them and that the bag of tricks excellent teachers carry around with them won't be enough. Many more potential excellent teachers don't even know yet all the talent within them because of the daily struggles inherent in their careers, and because they haven't yet read Ms. Elden's book. GIVE IT TO EVERY TEACHER YOU KNOW! It's one of those gifts that keeps on giving. It will benefit each teacher's students for decades to come.
