Book Review: Full of passion, intrigue and depth - very satisfying

Before I forget to mention it, I loved the cover - if I hadn't enjoyed this author's works in the past I would have picked it up for the cover alone.
I loved the setting of the Hudson River in Dutchess County NY, very authentically presented - makes me want to take a road trip there this year.
The story quickly opens with a meeting between thirty-three year old freelance journalist Adrian Oakes, who appears to have been born with a highly developed sensory so that she is almost painfully attuned to people and her surroundings. On a train heading out of New York City she is approached by Melinda Singer, an art gallery owner. Something about Melinda causes all of Adrian's senses to go hyper aware while the reader is given a sense that she might want to give Melinda a wide berth.
I loved the breathtaking introduction to Rooke - it surely kept me reading and gave me to know the utter confidence of this twenty-five year old woman. Rooke is a great character with many layers that the author carefully peels for you along the way.
I think one of my favorite things reading this novel was the depth of character revealed throughout the book, starting at the first chapter. The actions taken by the Adrian and Rooke always seem to fit. While Melinda is fittingly an enigma.
I thought the story resolution was spot on and was even surprised that the reader was given something of an epilogue in the last chapter. I didn't feel that any threads of the story that needed to be completed were left undone. The story ended perfectly for me.
Different from the authors previous novels, this story has what may or may not turn out to be supernatural forces at work, or perhaps it is that the humans in the story experience such strong emotions that they have the essence of the supernatural.
This was a total page turner that I have read twice now and very much recommend as a compelling romance of two people who care passionately for each other and the fascinating events in the one month time the novel is framed. I don't like to give plot points away but will say that Melinda is a striking character, the kind of person you meet at a social occasion and rememebr into the next week.
