Book Reviews of Secretariat: The Making Of A ChampionBook Review: Big Red Summary: 5 Stars
The original book by Nack was a hardback version entitled "Big Red of Meadow Stable". I have a first edition - don't EVEN think about buying it! Seriously, this is a wonderful book. Anyone who loves horses should read it. Yes it's about Secretariat, but all facets of horse racing, too. I guess I'm not a very good spokesperson, but really, the book is excellent - I can't count how many times I've read it (or let others read it, with some consternation)- not that I'm a ditz, it's like one of those movies you watch over and over - how many times can one say that about a book? It's just that another fact or piece of history jumps out at you each time you read it. (Oh geez, I missed that before!) Wonderful piece of writing by Mr. Nack - who some call Secretariat's "personal biographer" - it fits. He was there to almost the end.
Book Review: A Nack for Writing Summary: 5 Stars
I read this work some years back and considered it as I do now the most comprehensive work on the horse. Bill covers not only Secretariat's pedigree in great depth but also Penny's family ancestry, several generations. In so doing, he covers much of 'whos who' in the ancestry of American racing. Bill covers in depth many of Secretariats races, before and after, all the way through the triple crown events afterwhich he seems to soften up, as if the remaining were just mop-up. I wish he would have added additional material covering his days at Claiborne. If one wishes to become a Secretariat aficionado, this is a must read. There are a number of other works out there but this one I believe is the base from which to start. It is a long read so have fun.
Book Review: Fantastic book Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't alive when Secretariat was winning the Triple Crown so the only thing I know of him is what I have seen or read in the years following his tremendous accomplishments. This is a wonderful book for those who want to get the whole story of this magnificent champion. Nack looks at more than just the races that Secretariat ran in and won. Instead, he explores deep into everything surrounding Secretariat - the owners, the breeding industry, trainers, jockeys, hot walkers.....all of these charaters are brought to life in this book.
William Nack is truly one of the great sports writers of his generation and in "The Making of a Champion" he has produced the definitive biography of Big Red.
Book Review: Secretariat - The ONE True Champion Summary: 5 Stars
As a lover of horse racing, you can't help but love Secretariat as well. Secretariat: The Making of a Champion is an excellent read for horse racing lovers everywhere. You learn so much about what went on behind the scenes and how great of a horse Secretariat really was. William Nack provides an excellent narrative from the day Secretariat was foaled by Somthingroyal to the day of his last race.
If you love horse racing and Secretariat, there is no better book than this. You learn about the life of Penny Chenery to the life of this great red horse. You can see every stride he takes as he wins the Belmont by 31 lengths. An absolutely amazing book with great detail and insight.
Book Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
Just finished this book. The book flows very quickly and is very pleasant to read. Finished it in a couple of days, which is a testament to how readable it is. The book is also extremely informative, providing an excellent description of Secretariat's breeding, training and racing career, with the Triple Crown races being the centerpiece of the book. I enjoy horse racing and have become a huge fan of Secretariat who raced before my time. This book doesn't disappoint in the detail it provides. However what is most important to me is the degree to which I was engrossed by the narrative. Even though you know what happens in the end you find yourself lost in the story. It's definitely worth reading.
