Book Reviews of Secretariat: The Making Of A ChampionBook Review: Big Red was the Greatest of All Time Summary: 5 Stars
I was a small child when my father took me to Breakfast at Belmont in 1973. We had the pleasure and thrill of meeting Penney Chenery, and for a little kid like me at that time it was a BIG Thrill. This is the book that tells you the Life of Secretariat. For many, including this handicapper, Secretariat was the Greatest horse of All Time. We have heard stories and rumors that when they did the autopsy on Big Red they discovered his heart was 2 times the size of the normal Equine athelete. Watching the replay of the 1973 Belmont Stakes, one is filled with awe and its till gives me goosebumps to see Big Red charing off the turn and into the stretch completely alone. No horse in history has ever won a race of such importantce and prestige on his way to none other then a Triple Crown with such an amazing turn of speed and athletic performance. The records of Big Red's victories are here, but read about him as well, and it will show you why we all loved his so much as fans anf horse lovers. There will never be another Secretariat. Best Regards to all, MC - TheStickRules.Com
Book Review: Best I've Read Summary: 5 Stars
William Nack's book, Secretariat: The Making of A Champion, is the most wonderful, best written, book I've ever read! If you're a horse lover like I am, and if Secretariat is still your "hero", you will love this book. Once you get started reading, you'll find it hard to put down.
I'm an avid reader of non-fiction and this is the only book I've read twice from cover to cover. Somehow I lost the copy I read in 2003 and I had to read it again. I'm so glad I did. I think I enjoyed it even more the second time.
Mr.Nack puts you on Big Red's back throughout every race. You can hear the applause and screams from the grandstands. You can feel the power of that magnificient horse Ron Turcotte felt while in the saddle. You can almost hear his hoof beats on the track and on the turf.
Mr. Nack brings it all alive for you in his pages. He managed to bring Secretariat alive for me once more. My thanks to Mr.Nack for writing such a wonderful book about the horse I loved so much and that I still love today.
Book Review: A story of a legend Summary: 5 Stars
If you read ONE book about the great Secretariat let this be the one. Full of facts about the background and a thread of this mare and that stallion woven together to make a fabric - a complete story full of information and yet reads like a novel. From his conception, with his owner decided by the flip of a coin, to the heart wrenching story of his sire, Bold Ruler and the love Bold Ruler's owner had for him - the story of the purchase of the great *Nasrullah and the groom so tuned to him that when he nickered in the paddock the groom knew something was dreadfully wrong. These great horses make up the story...the full story...of the great Secretariat. Standing in front of Secretariat he'd make it clear he was definitely not "just a horse" - he was a camera ham and yet left people with the feeling they'd seen and touched a very special horse. Secretariat is gone but in the pages of this book his story lives on. What an awesome legacy for what some believe is THE greatest horse of the century. Long live his memory.
Book Review: Better than Seabiscuit! Summary: 5 Stars
I read this not long after reading Laura Hillenbrand's "Seabiscuit"--and I enjoyed "Secretariat" far more. I was reading it on the train and could not hide the tears running down my face. When he won the Triple Crown, one writer said of Secretariat, "He ran so far beyond known reference points, he left us with no measurable comparison." Secretariat transcended all the limits. His feat was deeply inspiring to me. The author was actually there with Secretariat and his connections day by day during his career, and writes with authority and obvious affection for his subject. The book was so well written that I absorbed that affection and ended up feeling as if I, too, knew this horse personally. He even unfolds the tale of Secretariat's pedigree in such an interesting and engaging way that it is helping me to understand current Derby prospects better. This is the best horse racing book I ever read, and I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.
Book Review: The Greatest Thoroughbred of My Generation Summary: 5 Stars
Some teenagers had Elvis, others the Beatles. I had Secretariat. I must confess I can barely think of "Big Red" or say his name without my eyes welling up in tears. Always a "horse nut" Secretariat touched my heart and spirit in someway no other horse has before or since. Instead of posters of rock stars on my college dorm wall it was ALL and ALWAYS Secretariat. I purchased this book several years ago and thought it was a truly excellent biography. The Brits have their Red Rum, I will always have "Big Red".
I also purchased a DVD of his races that I have smiled through my tears while watching. Highly recommend it for any Secretariat fan. The Life & Times of Secretariat, an American Racing Legend
There is a movie scheduled for release this summer (2010) about Big Red. See you in line at the theater!
Big Red Rules!
