I recently bought an earlier version of this book without knowing that a newer version was available. However, I learned quickly that Syd Field is the man! He really knows his stuff, and I would recommend this book and anything else that he does to others. From start to finish, SCREENPLAY provides great insight into screenwriting, examples of high-quality writing, and even ways to avoid your screenplay being rejected by a screenplay reader. In turning my recent book into a screenplay, I had no idea how to begin, I took this basic "How To" guide and ran with it, and banged out my first draft of a screenplay in less than a month. The text is clear and complete, and when I showed my document to experienced screenwriters, they were impressed by my breath of knowledge about effective scripts.
A must have for the library of screenwriters, or writers in general.

Book Review: Top of my professor's list!

Syd Field is at the top of my screenwriting professor's list of recommended books and after reading it I can see why. While the films he uses as examples are becoming a bit dated, at least in the edition I purchased, they still hold up to examination. The points he makes are simple, but not necessarily easy. I appreciate that he covers each aspect in depth with examples from his own classes as well as award winning films.Book Review: The Bible

If it didn't restate the same elements over and over I think this book would be about thirty pages long, but that aside it really is a fantastic resource. Something has to be said for those teachers who explain things in such a way that you believe you knew it all along (even though you didn't). By the time you get to the end, you have a pretty good idea of what you must do next.Mr. Field has several books out, but this is the one you should read first.
