Eight years ago I was diagnosed with Scoliosis. It was a complete shock to learn that I had a curve in my spine. I was 20 and had been in the military for a year and a half before I had started having any back problems. I saw an orthopedic surgeon who seemed quite surprised that at 40-degrees, I wasn't in any more pain than what I was experiencing at the time. I was told then that surgery was not recommended as I could control what discomfort I was in. Fast forward to last month. For about a year now I have felt an increase in pain and in muscle spasms. I had my yearly physical done along with my yearly x-rays. There is a significant change in last year's x-rays to this year. And then the words I've been dreading since my diagnosis came out: might not be a bad idea to start looking into having Scoliosis surgery. I've always been a holistic type person and have been extremely hesitant to even entertain the idea of surgery.
I must say, though, that after reading this book, I feel more confident in knowing what to expect from diagnosis to surgery, if that is the path that will need to be taken. The details and helpful hints throughout this book has changed my view of this surgery from "absolutely not!" to "it's a possibility." (Anything has to be better than what I experience daily and I'm so tired of putting more and more poison in my body.) It's encouraging to read about what to expect of the surgery and how it will be performed in layman's terms. The author does a wonderful job of explaining the whole procedure, start to finish. I would say this is a definite must read for anyone out there who has to think about this surgery and even more perfect for family and friends who will bear witness to the procedure and be a part of the recovery process.
