Book Reviews of Sarah: A NovelBook Review: Not enough Stars in the Sky! Summary: 5 Stars
This book deserves 1500 plus stars. I read Sarah and was in awe of it all - the words, the story, the characters and their development, the use of language - everything that makes a story brilliant....and this book is. I could not put it down. It touches you in a way that is hard to explain. LeRoy has a way of using language so beautifully it wraps itself around your heart and mind and won't let you go. Even when i HAD to put the book down to deal with the mundane in life, I kept thinking about it and when i could get back to it. It's an incredible, wondrous truckstop fairytale - think Lewis Carroll on a fabulous acid trip in the wilds of west virginia - i've never read anything like it. This book is a big blooming rose in a field of stinkweed - DON'T pass it by - pluck this literary flower, breathe it in and be mesmerized. You will not be disappointed!!
Book Review: See how society throws away kids.....read for yourself! Summary: 5 Stars
The experiences of J.T. Leroy are like many of those had by children I have counseled over the past 12 years. Though many readers may gasp or grunt with dismay over the raw, gritty descriptions Leroy has to offer, my advice to you is this: suck it up and get over it, because this is nothing compared to what some kids have experienced. So, put away your shocked faces, your queasy stomaches, and come out from your neatly sheltered lives for just long enough to understand and come to terms with how we throw away kids in society, just like Leroy. Be willing, for just a few hours, to delve into the darker side of life, a side that exists for children all over the world, and maybe this one opportunity will encourage you to go about your daily business with a little more sensitivity and compassion for others.
Book Review: ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Summary: 5 Stars
This has to be the BEST book I've ever read. J.T Leroy will take you places that you've never been before. The places aren't always beautiful and inviting, but it's always a place that you really hate to leave. This is 1 book that I was actually depressed when I finished reading it.....not because of the conclusion, but because I wanted it to keep on going. Anyone that can take a part of the anatomy of a raccoon and make it a fashion accessory is ok in my book........just read and find out.J.T. Leroy is so gifted and I really look forward to reading his future work. Also, SARAH is being made into a movie by Gus Van Sant, so read the book before the movie hits theaters. I would also HIGHLY recommend The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things.....His 2nd book. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Book Review: A dark and compelling read Summary: 5 Stars
I am in awe of Leroy's lyrical style. The subtle way in which he reveals his characters to you allows you an intimacy that I have never seen achieved by another author. I was drawn into this fascinating, sad story.
This is not an easy book to read, as you will find your stomache churning with pity and fear for it's main character, a 12 year old boy living as a prostitute at a truck stop, having spent years being raped by his mother's johns. But Leroy keeps his reader always first in his mind, careful to protect you from the worst part of it, to keep you just safe enough to not disengage from the story. I have never been so deeply involved in a story, and I can only accredit that to the masterful story development of Leroy.
Book Review: A book I would recommend over and over again. Summary: 5 Stars
So many reviewers appear to be so angry over who wrote this book. To me, it doesn't matter who wrote it. I loved the book for the story it told. Yes, I read it many years ago believing that a street kid named JT Leroy wrote it. We now know that this wasn't the case. It doesn't change anything though. It's still a beautifully written book that tells quite a sad story, one that touched me enought to want to read The Heart is Deceitful and Harold's End. JT may not have lived in life, but he certainly lived in my heart and remains there. His story, as most stories are, is one of fiction. There are SO many works of fiction that people worship. This is one that I
honestly consider one of my favorites.
