Book Reviews of Rule of Two (Star Wars: Darth Bane, Book 2)Book Review: Decent Summary: 4 Stars
This book doesn't reveal a whole lot about the Sith or the rest of the Universe, but it has a somewhat interesting story about how Darth Bane got his unique armor and his first apprentice.
Book Review: good but not as good as the first book. Summary: 4 Stars
I liked the book over all and it leads into the 3rd book just fine but I do think that this was kind of the low point in the 3 books
Book Review: Very good book Summary: 4 Stars
I haven't read the book yet, since I have to read the first one first, but it came in perfect conditions (NEW)
Book Review: The Battle of the Morons Summary: 3 Stars
(WARNING: mild spoilers in this review)
I read many reviews saying that it's a frustrating book, but I did not believe it until I read it. It does have some interesting things in it though, but it's mostly crap.
The Good:
The main and most worth mentioning good thing about this book is that it is the sequel of part 1. There are also a couple new-ish "dark" rules explored, but nothing major really.
The Bad:
1. Compare to part 1, this one is written for kids - I really felt old when I read it. You'll see lots of "powers" and events that make no sense and are complete fantasy, like Bane flying between planets on the back of a dragon-type of creature after for absolutely no reason completely crashed his luxury ship, knowing he would not have any other way out of that planet (moon). The wisdom he gained and demonstrated in part 1 is light years far from him in this book. On multiple occasions he acts plain stupid - a 4-yr old kid would be able to tell him "dude, wtf, you dumb??".
2. The Jedi though are even dumber in this book, and this is why Bane survives. I would never predict I'd be writing such things, but it was really frustrating to read how some dude with a knife and zero Force powers won a 1:1 fight against a Jedi Knight. Hey, did you know that if a jedi casts some shield around a Sith Lord at the moment he's releasing a lightning it will kill the Sith Lord?.... (and so on) Everyone in this book is acting extremely dumb - I know you're not believing me now, but you will see when you read it. Zannah is the only sane character in it.
3. Bad and unrelated to the story artwork.
a) This is the only of the 3 books that doesn't have hard cover and uses a childish illustratrion instead of the classic looking ones of the other two.
b) Have you noticed the Alice Cooper markings on Bane's eyes, that are even in the cover of part 1? Well, there's no explanation where he got them from, even in this book. In fact, they haven't even been mentioned yet.
c) Bane's light saber's handle is supposedly "hook-shaped", which gives him an advantage in fights because of the uncommon angle his strikes would come from. Why on the cover of the book it is a plain straight one?
Conclusion - it's an ok book, and you have to read it if you like the idea of the Sith in general - in order to continue to the 3d one, which (I hear) is good. But next time I read a book I don't want to see that the Sith survived out of pure luck, their wisdom and strength only harming them and no use of it what so ever, and opposing sides competing who can act dumber. I simply don't want another book based on that, especially not one that claims to place the foundations on which the whole Sith Order was built.
Book Review: Its not for lack of trying on the authors part.... Summary: 3 Stars
Bane is still a great character I just wish there was more of him in this particular installment. Instead the reader gets mostly Zannah who I don't even hate she is just boring. It wouldn't be so bad if the jedi weren't so idiotic yes we know that ultimately they have to fail (or at least be mislead) in order for the Sith to survive however I never expected them to be so idiotic about it. As a consequence of the characterization of Zannah, the general utter lack of plot direction and the lack of intelligence displayed on the part of this elite core of Sith hunting Jedi I really don't know what to think. On the one hand I respect an attempt at expanded universe trailblazing taking the stories to new and undiscovered territory but a way has to be found to spice things up a bit. Falling back on the same old worn Star Wars cliques is not going to impress anyone anymore there has to be someone out there with a fresh plot thread please help us out will yeah?
Overall-So to recap Bane is cool, Zannah is boring and the all but Jedi are underdeveloped galactic idiots. This particular installment was better then some of the worst Star Wars books of the 90s but if you remember Admiral Dala and champions of the force or Lord Hethrir of The Crystal Star that's not exactly setting the bar very high.
