Book Reviews of Ruffian: Burning from the StartBook Review: Wonderful! Best One! Summary: 5 Stars
This is definately one of the best books written on Ruffian. It was the final jewel to my Ruffian collection... Pictures, all the books written on her, videos of all her races, models, etc... and is one of my favorites. I've read it three times and each time it makes me cry. Unlike the other books, it does not describe Ruffian's death as "Ruffian was euthanized." Instead, it is in Ruffian's point of view. She's running freely now, with no cast, no pain. I did an oral language piece on this book and went on to regionals. I highly recommend this book to adults, but not to young kids. There is very frequent, strong language throughout this book, and is very detailed.Whether you are into horse racing or not, you will love this book. It is a wonderful addition to any horse lover's book collection!
Book Review: the greatest tribute to a true champion Summary: 5 Stars
When I was a child I picked up my first Ruffian book off a dusty bookshelf in my public library and since then her story has never failed to move me to tears. With this book Schwartz has managed to capture the true essence and beauty, the courage and the tragedy of the greatest filly that ever drew breath. Schwartz carefully crafts every facet of the filly's short life to her untimely death through the people and events surrounding Ruffian, and how she won the hearts of the world through her own unfailing heart and undefeatable love of the track she owned. This is indeed a superbly written book and is one of the greatest tributes that could be paid to Ruffian, the filly who broke the records and whose tragic, triumphant finish will continue to break our hearts for decades to come.
Book Review: Ruffian: Burning from the Start by Jane Schwartz Summary: 5 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling story of the legendary Ruffian. Jane Schwartz has beautifully crafted this story full of passion and historical detail, and to someone who had absolutely no knowledge of the anatomy or physiology of the animals, fascinating information about race horses themselves. In addition, there is the subtlety of the filly's promise and prominence during a time of feminist consciousness. Obviously comparisons with Sea Biscuit will be made, and they are both rich chronicles of different horses at different historical times - and with very different outcomes. I found this to be a wonderful book which I am highly recommending to everyone I know.
Book Review: Heartwarming and Heartwrenching- well worth the read Summary: 5 Stars
This is an amazing book! I loved every second of it from start to finish... I wish there were more to follow. One of the greatest throroughbreds of all times finally gets a great book. I learned so much about her life that just added to her brilliance. Everyone should know about this horse- most don't or say once she saw real speed she couldn't handle it and broke down. This is not the case and whether or not you are a horse lover, know a lot about racing or not, this story will get you hooked. I definately recommend this book, it will not disappoint you! You may shed a tear or two at the end, but it is WELL worth it.
Book Review: RUFFIAN, A LOVE STORY Summary: 5 Stars
This is a "MUST HAVE" book. A real page turner even for the non-horse lover. The "author" takes you in to the world of race horses, owner's, trainer's, jockey's and the behind the scene's workers to include the pace ponies and the good and bad. Be sure to keep the kleenex box close by.
I have ordered another book for my mother, rather than give her mine. On her 72nd birthday (3 years ago) she was inducted into the "Tennessee Walker" hall of fame, although she no longer shows, she is still an avid horse lover and takes part in annual trail rides. She will love this book as much as I did.
