Roget's International Thesaurus, 6th Edition, is a delightful book for anyone who really cares about verbal self exprssion in English. This truly great thesaurus is a powerful writing and speaking tool that gives you the opportunity to expand and refine your understanding and use of the English language like no other I know.
I remember discovering and buying my first thesaurus as a freshman in high-school. Our English teacher explained that while a dictionary provides the various meanings for a given word, a thesaurus provides many words for a given meaning. Already hooked on writing, I remember being excited by the notion of a book that provided alternative words for a given concept. English has more words by far than any language on Earth, and yet most of us use so few of them. But I was disappointed by my first dictionary style thesaurus, because it really didn't offer many alternatives that I didn't already know. I wanted a tool that would dig both more deeply and more broadly into the hundreds of thousands of words available to us English speakers. I struggled on with this dictionary style thesaurus until well after college, when I finally stumbled upon Roget's International Thesaurus, 6th Edition (RIT6). What an AMAZING find. I stood there in the bookstore, eyes wide, as I explored the pages. "THIS is what a thesaurus should be!"
For those of you who are only familiar with the dictionary style (alphabetically arranged) thesaurus, the RIT6 is a totally different beast. It's so much better, I call it the dino-thesaurus. The first difference you'll discover is that the book is divided into two sections. In the back is an alpha index of words, which is usually where your use of this book will begin. In the index, you'll locate the initial word/idea you're trying to explore and discover it's numeric classification. Next, you jump to the first part of the volume. There you will find the meat of the thesaurus, consisting of a collection of words organized by their conceptual similarity, arranged according to a system of numeric classification of meanings. In short, you find the word you want to explore, get it's numbers, flip to that number, and explore a whole field of words with the same meaning (sharing the same number) as well as words with similar but somewhat different meanings (sharing nearby numbers). It's this ability to specificially identify and explore which words mean the same thing (same numeric value) and which words mean something slightly different (numerically close values) or significantly different (numerically divergent values), and to understand both the similarity and difference in the meaning of the words, that represents the real power in the RIT6. In time, using the RIT6, you come to understand just how many shades of meaning there are around a given concept and how subtle and precise can be your self expression if you understand which word you really need.
I recently read a review by a user suggesting that Roget's International Thesaurus was shelved by the publishers in favor of the "NEW THESAURUS" in dictionary form, and that the RIT was not available past the 4th edition. Well, happily, this is not true. So buy this incredibly powerful and inexpensive wordsmithing tool. If you care about language and self expression, you'll be SO glad you did.
