Book Reviews of Robot Building for BeginnersBook Review: Great for more than just robots! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using First Robotics, VEX, and BotBall bots for quite a while now. Someone gave me this book for Christmas and I have to say that it is an amazing primer for anyone getting into robotics/electronics. Although it pertains to smaller robots, the information can be easily translated to any size. The authors tips and instructions are clear and dead on.
I particularly appreciated the electronics tips on how to use a multimeter. I cannot count how many times a student of mine have popped a multimeter because they were taking a resistance reading with the circuit activated. That is covered in the book though.
The author also suggests places to buy equipment and the book comes with a PCB (printed circuit board) which dramatically cuts down on the difficulty of the build and results in a clean awesome looking bot.
Book Review: Wow, a complete robot book! Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, a complete book for hobby robots. Not since my first robot book in the seventies by Tab have I seen such a great robot book. David does what the other books lack; he gives you part numbers and sources. And when you are done, you have a working robot. Not just someones ideas. I do not know how many times I have read a book only to spend days or fail in finding the parts the author used. The pictures are top notch and very clear. Wish some web site publishers would take notes of his great pictures! I would not call my self an expert, but I picked up several new ideas from the book. This is a first class book for a beginner or experienced robot builder alike. I have also recommended it to several of my customers. Hope David writes another book, I can't wait. Book Review: Awesomeness Summary: 5 Stars
This book is designed to make even the beginner start to understand components and logic behind robot building. He explains in detail some of the things other books take for granted - how to use a multimeter, for example. Along with each component is a 'buying guide' of sorts - what to look for in that component and advice as what you can scrimp on and what you should splurge with regards to robot parts and hardware. Included are suppliers for each part, but note that these are US only. Living in Australia, these weren't much a help, but gave me a good price approximation.
Theories and concepts behind each step of the process are described in good detail. I loved this book. Informative, heaps of photos, and just awesome overall.
Book Review: Awesome Robot Book Summary: 5 Stars
I found David Cook's book to one of the best robot books out there for 3 reasons. First, David teaches you electronics as you go through the book; and you don't even realize that your learning electronics your just thinking, "I want to know this to build a cool robot." Second, unlike most other robot books, this one is for the beginner and takes the builder all the way through the completion of a single project--a line following robot. Finally, David Cook maintains a website that provides updates to his book and useful links for even more robot building resources. I strongly feel that this shows the author's dedication to encouraging novice robot builders to continue building robots.
Book Review: Detailed yet simple for the beginner Summary: 5 Stars
The pictures are great. Not only do they make individual steps clear, but also seem to bring the parts and concepts into your own home or workshop. The writing is light-hearted and enjoyable. At the end of every chapter, I found myself saying, "Okay, just one more chapter and then I'll go to sleep". Very motivating.
