Book Reviews of River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt

Book Review: Pure Ancient Egyptian Fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

This first of four (so far) novels in Wilbur Smith's Ancient Egypt line is simply a great fun read. I have just enough knowledge of ancient Egypt to know that the events of this novel take place in a time that we know little about and yet the story is a plausible one. He gets the religious aspects right, he gets the technology right, and he gets the warfare right. But there is more than just a story about ancient Egypt and that is what makes it so much fun.

I really enjoyed the way the author chose to tell the tale. The narrator, Taita, is a fascinating character and his narrative style leads one on and on, always wanting to read just one more chapter. He is a slave in the upper echelons of power and trusted advisor in all aspects, thus in a perfect position to tell the story. From the beginning the reader cares greatly for the characters and what happens to them, always the mark of great fiction. The author is known for fun novels full of swashbuckling action and unpredictable plots. If there is such a thing as swashbuckling Egyptian adventure, this is it.

Book Review: Terrific story with lots of cultural info as well
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my all-time favorite stories! The characters are so well written & the story is outstanding. The slave, Taita, who tells the story is an engaging character, and his devotion to Lostris, the daughter of his master, is heartwarming. The adventures these two have over their lifetimes are so much fun to read. There is also a lot of information about ancient Egyptian mythology, culture, etc. woven in so that you learn a lot while reading it. This is one I re-read a couple times a year and I never get tired of it - what a great movie it would make!

Book Review: The River God
Summary: 5 Stars

The River God is a rousing tale of ancient Egypt. It brings to life, with great detail, a time long past. The characters are well rounded and totally believable. Once you start it, it is hard to put down. Based on this book alone, I immediately bought the rest of the "Ancient Egypt" series. I became aquainted with Wilbur Smith years ago with his novel The Sunbird. His writing is just outstanding. I highly recommend The River God, The Seventh Scroll, The Warlock, and The Quest (although The Quest is a little bit "out there".

Book Review: an epic historical thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

"An epic historical thriller, based on excellent research and knowledge of the Pharonic area and the united kingdom of the upper and lower Nile. Did you know that the Hixus introduced horses to Egypt or that the Arabs from Saudi taught ancient Egyptians to replace their bronze swards with iron swords? when finishing the 3 books on ancient Egypt by Smith you'll know this and many other historical tit bits. I'm a fan of Wilbur Smith, read all (?) his books and liked almost all of them. "

Book Review: River god
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutly loved this book. It was actually a reading assignment for my ancient history class so automatically I thought it would be lame and boring. I procastinated reading it for weeks until there was only 1 week left to read it. I read this book for hours a day until i finished it in about 5 days. I ended up absolutey getting aborbed in the action of it. It was great! I absolutley reccommend it to anyone who likes to read.
