Book Review: Do You Have the Right to Lead?

"The Right to Lead" is a small hardcover gift book that is an ideal start for the burgeoning leader. Written by "leadership expert" John C. Maxwell and culled from his previous books on leadership, this tome is a seed for leadership rather than a deep study of the subject. This is evident by the glossy pages of photos and quotes and brief biographical stories of past leaders such as Harriet Tubman, George Washington, John Wooden and Moses. However, do not let the thinness of the book fool you of its potent contents. For time-harried readers, plunging into one of the seven sections, action; vision; sacrifice; risk; determination; service or integrity will awaken one to what is needed for the right to lead.
Think you need a Harvard degree or the reins of a company to be a leader, than think again after reading about Eddie Rickenbacker, "The Ace of Aces", under the determination section. Maxwell illustrates this section's theme and the other six attributes of a leader with stories that exemplify the particular section. Maxwell succinctly relates how determination helped Rickenbacker became the breadwinner of his family at age twelve after his father died; set the world speed record for racing after only racing for two years; enlist and excel as an aviator in World War I despite being labeled average and undereducated; survive a plane crash and several weeks on a raft in the Pacific during World War II; and lead Eastern Airlines to be successful without relying on the government for subsidizes.
