Book Review: Another Great Title On President Ronald Reagan
Summary: 5 Stars
As time passes after President Reagan's death, I have grown to respect him even more as a president and person. How ironic that today many political leaders want to forget and discredit his accomplishments and legacy.
"Riding With Reagan" by John Barletta focuses not so much on Reagan's politics and presidency as it does on Reagan the man. While the book describes Reagan's obvious horse riding skills, there are other aspects of his life covered:
1. Deep relationship with Nancy and sometimes testy relationship with his children.
2. Aspects of his beloved California ranch (simplicity, having world leaders visit, love of riding horses and doing physical labor such as chopping wood and building fences, etc.).
3. Personal friendship with the author.
4. A president who refused to put on airs to impress others and was comfortable in just being himself.
5. Relationships with the Secret Service.
6. Glimpses into Reagan's social life while in the White House and final goodbyes when he left office.
7. Unfortunate onset of Alzheimer's disease that eventually claimed his life.
8. Funeral procession in Washington DC and California.
The read is a smooth read and is full of fond remembrances of President Reagan. As stated earlier, the more I read about Reagan, the fonder I become of him, particularly in a day when politicians wish to forget about him. Whether or not you voted for or agreed with Reagan's leadership, you will grow to respect the man as you read this book and realize how much he appreciated common people.
