Book Reviews of Richard Scarry's Busy, Busy TownBook Review: Love Richard Scarry books Summary: 5 Stars
I sent this to my 3-year-old grandson; I had already given him the Richard Scarry Word Book. He loves them both. BUT I just ordered from Amazon sellers two used (but almost perfect condition) copies of the First Picture Dictionary Ever, which is out of print, alas. The Dictionary was the favorite of my two daughters, and now I have a copy to give each family. All Richard Scarry books are gentle and engaging with so much detail that the child notices new things with each reading. Can't say enough good things! I think ages 1 year (with supervision) to as old as 8, but 3 to 6 really love these books. They will bring the book to you to read, and then they will teach themselves to read.
Book Review: Every Child MUST Own This Book! Summary: 5 Stars
Ever since I was little I have been so unbelievably inspired by Richard Scarry's Busy Town books. I can remember trying to draw pictures in the same style as his, and now that I am older, I find the Busy Town books are still at the top of my inspiration list. Not only do his books contain cute little animals wearing clothing and going about their lives as humans do, it teaches children words, jobs, food, cars, right vs wrong, etc. I recently purchased this book to inspire the art that I do now. After all these years, I STILL credit Richard Scarry books as the number one thing that lets my imagination soar!
Book Review: Sure, it's sexist... Summary: 5 Stars
While I agree with the Danish reader that sexism is prevalent in this book, the reader should be aware that Richard Scarry died 10 years ago (1994). Later "Scarry" books, as written by Richard Scarry's son, Hank, do reflect current times and attitudes. However, I think Hank Scarry would be hard-pressed to tamper with his father's book, which many people consider a classic. I suggest using this book (as well as Cinderella, Snow White, etc.) as an opportunity to discuss sexism with your children. It's more productive than complaining about the dead on Amazon.
Book Review: Looking for Mr. Frumble Summary: 5 Stars
This was a cherished book of my childhood. A few years ago I was out looking for this book for myself. I discovered that the newer versions didn't have the story about a day in the life of Mr. Frumble. This was the highlight of the whole book for me. The one I had as a child has been lost. I figure the original had to be published somewhere between 1970 and 1985. If anyone has a way of getting a hold of this version I would be so thankful. My e-mail address is wjengr@flash.net.
Book Review: Excellant for kids Summary: 5 Stars
Unfortuantely, Richard Scarry's work sometimes gets criticized as being anti-feminist. As a result, his classic book Busy, Busy, World (my favorite book as a child) is out of print. But, come on ladies, let's move on. Scarry is an extremely talented illustrator that kids love. My daughter insists we read this book every night. So save the feminist rantings for more appropriate targets, and leave Scarry's work alone.
