The eighth "Star Wars" book in the lastest arc "Revelation" does not disappoint.
If you are a fan of the Empire, it's commanders and some of the older imperial characters developed by Kevin J. Anderson and Timothy Zahn, you need to read this book. Without giving too much away, I was always worried that these characters would slowly fade out of exisitance (i.e. like Admiral Ackbar, who died a slow and unspectacular death in a shallow pool of water, no doubt) instead of being giving a decent send-off (or come back.) Let's say that the parts of this story that concentrated on the old order of imperials were my favorite.
I have also noticed that a lot of people complain about the Boba Fett storyline, which took my awhile to get into myself. At points it seemed to labor on, with lots of extra details (especially at the end of the book.) But in the end, it didn't bother me too much. Jaina seemed to fit well here, which I really wasn't expected. Other than being too nosey, I actually believe that she has something to learn from the Mandalores. I am looking forward to the next book to see how it all turns out.
Leia and Han are noticably absent from this story, which was an excellent decision. Trying to include them in any major way would have diverted from the story too much. Jacen or Caedus is a stronger, but a more unsteady character now... who still manages to show enourmous power followed by spectacular fits. He has chosen a new apprentice, (or pet, more like) who is unconvincingly converted to the dark side in about 1.2 seconds. That's not a critique of author, but of the matieral she has to use in the SW Universe.
Ben Skywalker is also a factor in the story, still searching for his mother's killer. He gets some unexpected breaks, but this detective element is evenly paced against the storylines concerning the War, Fett, and the Empire.
Finally, the only critical things I have to say concern terminology. The term "carbonited" is used, which I suppose is better than the alternative (i.e. carbonized, which sound a like like carmelized...) And the term "old school" Moffs was used. I dunno if these are the moffs who just "kick it" old school, or the Moffs who grew up on the mean streets of Bastion or Coruscant. It's too much of an "our world" term.
This is a great story, well balanced, and Go read this book!
