Book Reviews of Return to Labyrinth Volume 1 (v. 1)

Book Review: Labyrinth? Not quite..
Summary: 2 Stars

Let's just say that I had higher hopes for this american-made-manga-wannabe, and it just did not deliver.

Allow me to begin my complaints with the cover. For much of the reasons stated previosuly by others, I was put off horribly when I found that the cover artist was not in fact the actual manga artist. Why does this matter? Because the cover is beautiful while the inside looks as if it were drawn by amateur rather than a professional. Labyrinth deserves far more respect, the art of Brian Froud deserves to be honored rather than cheapened. And trust me, the artist in this did Froud no justice. The illustrations reminded me more of a Sunday paper funny rather than a novel. Which would have been fine, but Sunday funnies don't cost $10 a pop. Far more is expected when it comes to manga, even if it really isn't made in Japan. The art should at least properly reflect the medium, the cover did, which just made it worse almost tricking a purchaser into buying it.

The storyline shows small promise I was fine with Toby being the main character. I'm even somewhat interested in learning more about how he handles the situation. But what happened to Sarah? I'll leave it at that.

My review may seem harsh but I've loved the film from my very early years, til even now, far too much to really count this story as part of them. I'll be sure to read the next one (if there is a next one) in the book store before I blow my money again.

Book Review: Only for "Die Hard Will Buy Anything Related To It" Labyrinth fans
Summary: 2 Stars

As stated, the cover art is gorgeous but the inside art is disappointing. For an item whose appeal is at least a third based on art (the other two thirds being storyline and connection to the cult film Labyrinth), this is not acceptable. However, if the storyline was engaging and worthwhile the art could be tolerated. The storyline, sadly, is not. The dialog seems juvenile at times and the plot just seems weak. It introduces too many new characters and almost ignores beloved old characters making its connection to the film shaky, the third and final reason to buy it. As someone else stated, it feels more like a fan fiction with pictures that an official graphic novel. I'm a minor Labyrinth collector, so this is something to add to my collection, but that's it. I won't be reading it again and I didn't enjoy it the first time I did. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because it is related to Labyrinth.

Book Review: Check the inside before you buy it, and avoid a dissapointment.
Summary: 2 Stars

The cover looks haunting, it emules the perfect designs Master Brian Froud whispered into the creation of the world of "Labyrinth"
The cover art, done by "Alichino" artist, Kouyu Shurei sensei, fits perfectly with Mr. Froud's style.
Yet, once you open the book, it has nothing of that lovely cover style.
You enter a complete different style, opposite to manga. You find American comic style, in the pages, and although its good, it's not what the cover offered.

I mean, I don't mind a american style artist drawing this, but, if the cover is by a Japanese mangaka and the art is american artist, is like buying a pocky box and find it filled with m&ms.
The same? not quite.

Book Review: Shaky start to a maybe promising series
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm going to have to go with everyone else and say that the cover art is nothing like the art inside. Obviously, the artist did not care much about the work, fortunately, he improved a bit for the second installment. I initially was not going to bother with this, but since it is I suppose, 'Henson approved' I thought I could give it a shot. Forbes should have a care with what he's writing with. There is a huge fan base for Labyrinth and I hope that this series will improve and focus on what we really wanted to see: Jareth and Sarah.

Book Review: It,s good, but not as much as the film
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm a huge fan of Jim Henson's movies, specially The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.I think this comic book doesn't make justice to Brian Froud wonderful design for the film.the graphic style is a bit dissapointing and the story is quite stupid ( I find Jareth's interest in Toby a bit gay),not to mention how does Sarah like or all those coarse jokes.I don't know why to do 3 more sequels to this..
