Book Reviews of Return to Labyrinth Volume 1 (v. 1)

Book Review: Okay.
Summary: 3 Stars

So, having seen the Labyrinth as a kid, I grew up curious about what happened next. -Always hoped sooner or later, Jareth and Sarah would hook up. Then I noticed in a bookstore one day that there was Labyrinth manga. So... not being a manga reader I avoided it for years... and then, eventually, just couldn't get it out of my head and had to buy it just to find out if Sarah and Jareth got together. That's all I wanted to know. ... ... ...If you're in the same boat as me, let me tell you, you'll have to buy all four books before you even get to see Sarah and Jareth share more than a page together... and well, I mean, I guess they didn't make it so that they don't end up together, but really, if you're looking for a happy ending - not the most satisfying. Still they're not terrible books. You just read a lot about Toby - who is about as interesting as a teen as he was as a child. I think they should have let him remain the macguffin, but that's just me. Anyhoo, not bad, but not satisfying.

Book Review: Dissapointed but hopeful.

Mega fan of Labyrinth I squealed like a pig when this poped up on Tokyopop. The cover was so biseienen & used the current popular drawing fashion in Japan (kudos to the gal that drew it). I was dissapointed, but I'm still curous enough to see where it goes to buy future volumes.

Pros: Reliving Labyrinth in a new light, more Jerith, the cover would make an awesome poster ^__^ The illustrater is very good with landscape, goblins look great, all the animals from the movie look just as they should, the clothes & screen tones aren't too bad. The girl in the goblin mask is a very decent new character.

Cons: Feels more like an unofficial Labyrinth/Demon Diary crossover fanfic than an official continuation. Sarah is completely out of character & 3 of the new felmale characters seem ill-fitting. The illustrator is terrible with profiles, hands, & hair. The character design is borderline Marvel-Amerime.

Book Review: Diverting little manga about my favorite movie
Summary: 3 Stars

Geared toward teens and thus a new generation of Labyrinth fans younger than those who saw the movie's theatrical release, Return... pays homage to the original with a similar punny, potty-mouthed sense of humor. Those familiar with the movie will also enjoy picking out continuity nods, old favorites [hey, Hoggle really is "prince of the Land of Stench!"] and plot parallels.

Devout Sarah fans will be disappointed, since blockily drawn, bespectacled [?!] Sarah has only a small role in this volume. Devout Jareth fans will probably object to the portrayal of the Goblin King as a long-fingered, smarmy figure whose interest in Toby seems predatory [when giving some royal garb to Toby, he assures the boy that he "won't peek"]. Taken for what it is, though - a lightweight supplement to a cult favorite - Return... is an amusing curiosity.

Book Review: Could have been epic.
Summary: 3 Stars

I was very excited when I seen this book! I have been wanting to see what Sara's future was and as most little girls, I wanted to see Jareth agian. I had never read a magna before but I got the jist of it being a big comic book. However I think this book is infact for the younger crowd. I loved the pictures and as I read the other books in this series the plot is devloping nicely I believe however this would have been much much better as a regular book. I read the book in under an hour and was left upset that I already had to buy the next book. This first book is more like a chapter would have been in a regular book. I havent read all the books in this series yet but seeing as there only 4 out and I dont know if there will be more, I feel I am going to be left wanting more.

Book Review: Wolf in sheeps clothing.
Summary: 3 Stars

For those of you that just heard of this book dont get your hopes high like I did. Here let my explain, I love the movie its great its submersing and entrancing. But the book now, well do you like the cover? If you do, you most likly wont like the book. The reason why is a different artist drew the cover the inner work is comparable to saturday morning catoon art, the only things that look good in the book are the goblins and such, but then thay dont look like thay should. Pushing on to the story, the story is rather good, but looking past the bad art work in the book after seeing the beautifull cover art is hard. But if your a die hard fan you will look past the art like I did and enjoy the story.
