Book Reviews of Restoring Hope

Book Review: CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN WEST AND A WIDE VARIETY OF FIGURES
Summary: 5 Stars

Cornel West (born 1953) is a Professor at Princeton, a philosopher, magnificent speaker, best-selling author (e.g., Race Matters, Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism, The American Evasion of Philosophy: A Genealogy of Pragmatism (Wisconsin Project on American Writers), etc.), and preeminent "public intellectual."

West writes in the Preface to this 1997 book, "This book is a kind of wake-up call to each of us. The country is in deep trouble. We need a moral prophetic minority of all colors who muster the courage to question the powers that be, the courage to be impatient with evil and patient with people, and the courage to fight for social justice. Such courage rests on a deep democratic vision of a better world that lures us and a blood-drenched hope that sustains us."

Here are some other quotations from the book:

"When you think of the institutions that the foremothers and forefathers organized and sustained, and then when you look at professional black people today and ask what institutions they have created and sustained, it's a joke. It's a joke! And it's partly because of levels of distrust. Before, in the past they bonded together against the odds. Which meant courage and love. And then they had more fun. They had more joy. Even though they're catching more hell." (Pg. 98)
(Wynton Marsalis) "I talk to students all the time. They say, 'Our music.' I have to say, 'Son, you don't have any music. There are people sixty years old putting out these things and determining what you're going to like. You didn't make that. There ain't no teenagers doing this." (Pg. 128)
"You know, when I think of hope, I think of courage, and I think what has kept black people hoping, the best of our tradition is hoping, has been both a certain courage to be and a courage to tell the truth about America." (Pg. 190)

Summary of Restoring Hope

"Cornel West is one of the most authentic, brilliant, prophetic, and healing voices in America today"

?Marian Wright Edelman

Nine of America's most influential artists, scholars, and public figures?Maya Angelou, Bill Bradley, Harry Belafonte, Patricia Williams, Wynton Marsalis, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, James Washington, James Forbes, and Haki Madhubuti?talk with Cornel West about their political awareness, art and politics, and the possibility of hope among African-Americans today.

"This book has all the freshness, all the spontaneity of good conversations anywhere, and benefits greatly from the integrity and wisdom of its contributors."

?McKay Jenkins, The Star-Ledger, Newark
"This is not a book for the faint-hearted. . . . Cornel West, an authentic, brilliant and prophetic black voice, deals squarely and directly with America's problems of race, recommending changes in behavior and attitude among blacks as well as whites, prescribing solutions difficult to attain, but no more difficult than perpetuation of the status quo."

?Melvyn Schreiber, County Daily News, Galveston, Texas
"West manages to extract something from each [contributor]. His intellectual exuberance flavors the book, and the conversations reveal important truths about our racial impasse."

?In These Times
Harvard professor Cornel West issues "a kind of wake-up call to each of us,"asserting that "Black America sits on the brink of collective disaster." In this collection of eight question-and-answer interviews, West seeks ideas for inspiring and reinvigorating black America. Actor-singer Harry Belafonte talks about his influences; politician Bill Bradley urges each of us to confront race in our daily lives; poet Maya Angelou makes the point that "one other word for hope is love"; and trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis discusses both music and the need to rebuild black communities. The book is a project of the Obsidian Society, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to improving conditions for black Americans. Profits from the book will benefit the organization.
