Book Reviews of Relentless (The Lost Fleet, Book 5)

Book Review: Returning Home
Summary: 5 Stars

Relentless (2009) is the fifth naval SF novel in The Lost Fleet series, following Valiant. The initial work in this sequence is Dauntless.

In the previous volume, the lost fleet lost another battlecruiser in the Cavalos system due to overambitious tactics. The Opportune had to be scuttled with a power core overload. A scout battleship also had to be destroyed, but not because of foolishly brave maneuvers.

Geary interrogated a Syndic CEO, who was second in command of the Syndic flotilla. He reacted strongly to remarks about the aliens. After their discussion, the Syndic had quite a bit to think about. Geary arranged his release so that he could go ask some questions of his rulers.

In this novel, Jack Geary is the designated acting commander of the fleet survivors. He is the most senior captain within the Alliance due to his century long stasis in an escape pod. Unfortunately, he is also trapped within his own legend.

Tanya Desjani is an Alliance Captain, commanding the Dauntless. She is Geary's Flag Captain. She works extremely well with Geary.

Victoria Rione is the Co-president of the Callas Republic and a member of the Alliance Senate. She is the only civilian within the fleet. She is one of Geary's closest advisors.

Roberto Duellos is an Alliance Captain, commanding the battlecruiser Courageous. He is an advisor to Geary.

Tulev is an Alliance Captain, commanding the battlecruiser Leviathan. He is an advisor to Geary.

Jaylen Cresida is an Alliance Captain, commanding the battlecruiser Furious and the Fifth Battlecruiser Division. She is an advisor to Geary.

Badaya is an Alliance Captain, commanding the battlecruiser Illustrious.

Caligo is an Alliance Captain, commanding the battlecruiser Brilliant.

Neeson is an Alliance Commander, commanding the battlecruiser Implacable.

Carabali is an Alliance Colonel. She is the senior officer among the remaining Marines of the fleet.

In this story, the lost fleet is within the Dilawa system. The long abandoned system has no Syndic ships or personnel. The fleet has scrounged for food and other supplies in the remaining facilities. Then a HuK and two corvettes follow then from Cavalos.

Geary is having some difficulties in choosing the next destination. The fleet is desperately low in expendables. He is procrastinating, so Rione and Desjani push him for a decision. When Desjani reminds him that the situation will not get any better, Geary decides to go to Heradao.

Geary calls a conference of ship commanders and announces his decision. He mentions the possibility of POWs in the system. Tulev interrupts to comment on the food shortage. The commanders are all worried about food and other expendables.

Geary then states that they will go to Padronis after Heradao. Kila asks about jumping to Kalixa from Heradao instead. She points out that Kalixa has a hypernet gate.

Neeson declares that the dangers of a hypernet overload are too great and Cresida supports his statements. Geary rebukes Kila for her disparaging remarks about Neeson's courage. Caligo makes a few vapid statements that are rather unexceptionable. He has never spoken in previous meetings and Geary wonders about his comments.

Duellos stays behind after the meeting. They discuss the behavior of Caligo and Kila. Geary learns much about Kila's abuse of subordinates and peers. He makes a mental note to keep his eyes on these two.

After Duellos leaves, Geary confers with Rione on the sabotage attempts against the fleet and the campaign for a Black Jack coup. Rione knows nothing more about the worms in the ship computers. Kila is mentioned as a possible suspect, but Rione thinks Kila is too disliked to become fleet commander and too independent to become a stooge for anyone else.

Rione does have a suggestion about Badaya and the other Black Jack coup proponents. She recommends that Geary talk the situation over with his flag captain. Then she states that she does not want to deal with Geary as a savior on horseback in the Alliance.

Later Geary calls a meeting of his closest advisors. They discuss the aliens and the hypernet threat. Duellos, Tulev, Cresida, Desjani, Rione and Geary decide to keep the hypernet threat concealed from the Senate when they return.

Cresida is working on a design to damp the energy release of a failed gate. Geary asks for a prioritized list for distribution of data on the hypernet threat and the plans for the damper device. Tulev volunteers to provide such a list.

In Heradao, the lost fleet finds Syndic ships, but nothing close by. The main flotilla is orbiting almost four light-hours away. A much smaller formation is about five light-hours away in a different sector. Neither group can block the fleet from reaching the Kalixa jump point.

Desjani is disturbed by the Syndic positions. She suspects that they want the lost fleet to jump to Kalixa. Geary realizes that the Syndics might be planning to blow the hypernet gate in that system.

Geary comes up with a new battle plan for the fleet. Desjani is not pleased with it. Geary is breaking tradition by sending battleships ahead of the rest of the fleet.

This tale greatly reduces the number of Syndic ships. Yet the lost fleet expendables are at dangerously low levels. The fleet auxiliaries can only produce a limited amount of weapons and materiel.

The lost fleet jumps into Padronis. The next installment in this sequence is Victorious.

Highly recommended for Campbell fans and anyone else who enjoys tales of naval combat, tactical maneuvering, and competent fleet commanders. Read and enjoy!

Summary of Relentless (The Lost Fleet, Book 5)

After successfully freeing Alliance POWs, "Black Jack" Geary discovers that the Syndics plan to ambush the fleet with their powerful reserve flotilla in an attempt to annihilate it once and for all. And as Geary has the fleet jump from one star system to the next, hoping to avoid the inevitable confrontation, saboteurs contribute to the chaos.
