Book Reviews of Rebel Heart: An American Rock 'n' Roll JourneyBook Review: (Fem) eyes, wide open Summary: 5 Stars
What a cool read! I was shocked to see so many dismissive, abusive reviews at Amazon; probably written by a bunch of pothead dudes. Hey, just look at the cover photo - that hair! I'm gonna faint! And Buell's text flows with more introspection and wit than I expected. She really conveys the uberfem existence, floating serendipitously along the power trails of megadaddies. Of course, I had to envy her charmed fortune. No bimbo, she knew the score and her place in it. Did rather well, all and all. (I will confess, looking at her lyrics, it was obvious to me why Buell couldn't get it on as a recording star. Too bad she didn't get herself some backing vocal action going with the Stones or Aerosmith to prime the career pump. But, anyway!) Name-dropping good fun (with some understandable defensiveness regarding her professional split with moviestar daughter Liv Tyler). A lovable read, and no doubt a lovable lady. Thrilling anecdotes, fascinating photos - and a real keen descriptive eye on all the boys' personalities. Very feminine assessments of her famous guys - that's probably why the Amazon reviews exhibit so much rancor. Plus her insights into her emotional (and, sure, sexual) giving as a livelihood and philosophy communicates a lot about the world all women know. Compassion for sale! Beull had (and saw) the fun part, but she tacitly and effectively suggests how, for lesser fem mortals, it is a brutally uncertain world women inhabit.
Book Review: Not the bio of Betty Crocker but... Summary: 5 Stars
A very exciting book for anyone who loves dangerous and daring women. I do think that some of the reviews on here reflect the jealousy in others as opposed to the actual content of Rebel Heart. People can be so catty and someone like Bebe Buell has probably had to deal with that her entire life. And what a life! Coming out of a time in history where hippies ruled and "live for today" was the motto, Rebel Heart never skips a beat. You feel the innocence of the 60's, the rebellion of the 70's, the recklessness of the 80's, the growing up in the 90's and finally in a new century, the fullfillment of a life well lived. Bebe Buell has been many things- a model, rock singer, recording artist, manager, agent, mother, animal activist, vegetarian(avid), best selling author, creative consultant, wife. And now a spokesperson for all women over 40. "Fifty and fabulous" is a well deserved title for this next part of Buell's life to come. I respect the fact that she doesn't take getting older lying down but instead she embraces it by becoming a model again with one of the top modeling agencies in the world! We need more woman like Bebe and we need more books like Rebel Heart and any follow ups that come in the future. I for one would like to know how to be fifty and fabulous and stay happy and vibrant. I bet Bebe could tell us and I bet we will listen.
Book Review: This book keeps me going Summary: 5 Stars
I joined Amazon just so I could review this book, Rebel Heart. When I was stationed in Iraq (home now) this book was my escape from a lot of hell. Bebe Buell's beauty and past with Playboy was what drew me in and now that I'm here, I'm sold on much more. I'm a big Todd Rundgren fan too and used to think she and Todd were the golden couple of the 1970's for sure.
There is something so honest and good about her. She is a kind person and it shows in her words. Or Victor Bockris?? Not sure who wrote what but I tend to be moved by Bebe's story.
I am another person who does not see the bad things that some of these reviews focus on. It is truly a bunch of hogwash to think Bebe is anything but honest and telling it like it is.
I admire that.
Now that I'm back in the USA I'm going to go out of my way to see her perform with her band.
I have let a few of my buddies look at Rebel Heart and we are all in love. Bebe still looks smoking hot even at the age of 52.
We listened to a lot of music over there to keep our sanity and I've got my "Retrosexual" CD close at hand. Right next to my copy of Rebel Heart.
Bebe, thank you for making my hell a lot easier to handle. Now that I'm home and back to a somewhat normal life, I carry her life in my thoughts.
I'm a big big fan and supporter.
Book Review: Make Up Your Own Mind about Rebel Heart Summary: 5 Stars
Some of the reviews on here are bogus! They seemed to have been penned either by people with an agenda or jealous types!
A few of the exisiting ones actually read like they were written by someone who didn't even bother to read "Rebel Heart".
Bebe Buell is NOT "big headed" nor is she bitter. She is sweet and her recall is impressive. She treats her subjects with respect- even when she is telling a less than flattering story.
It is after all a "bio" and when you write about yourself it is hard to avoid talking about yourself, lol. I never once got the impression that Bebe was bragging or saying how great she is as some on here have depicted. Just isn't the case. I was brought to tears many times. I was also doubled over in hysterics as Bebe recalled some of her youthful experiences.
In the end it is always best to make up your own mind about a book and not really let a review (good or bad) effect your opinion.
That's what I did and I wasn't disappointed at all. I am a "latecomer" to this delightful book. I just got it for my birthday in April. It has remained on my bedside table ever since.
Book Review: What a beautiful soul! Summary: 5 Stars
The first time I read Rebel Heart I kind of dismissed it. For some reason I took it out again and reread it and much to my delight and surprise I was pulled in- all the way in.
It is one of those books that you have to digest, think about and then redigest. When you do that it all becomes clear. Bebe Buell is a good person with a beautiful soul. Not once does she come off as bitter or damaged. The opposite rings true. She is a trooper she is.
My girlfriend is also a big fan of this book. She reads it on and off still to this day and it came out in 2001. Talk about hanging in there!
Rebel Heart is one of those bios that stays with you long after you've read it. So much so you return for another dose.
*confession*-I was also inspired to pull it out after reading the new Iggy Pop bio by Paul Trynka- Bebe shines in that too.
What a gal. One of music's true muses. No doubt about it.
It is obvious why Liv Tyler turned out so well. She has her mother's survival skills and class.
