Book Reviews of Rants

Book Review: Rant On, Dennis!
Summary: 4 Stars

This collection of rants from Dennis Miller is generally excellent and topical social commentary. Written long before 9/11 and his coming of age as a more conservative voice, this is a fairly libertarian, rational, and practical look at life in the United States. There are a few areas that I disagree with him on, but I am not recommending that anyone think a certain way, just that people hear different concepts with an open mind and make their own decisions. In this book you can see the seeds of Miller's conservatism, although it is clear that he has been awakened and revitalized by the events of 9/11 and is thus more conservative now than when this book was written.

Overall, this is a neat summary of Miller's world view as it existed in 1996. His gift of satire is preeminent in the world today, and while probably everyone will find something in this book to provoke or annoy them, at least it insists on the reader thinking for themselves. I would have given this book five stars except for the fairly frequent profanity. I know this is adapted from some of his HBO material, but the book could be used for a much younger audience to excellent effect if not for the language. Excellent job overall: highly recommended for people of any political leaning.

Book Review: I didn't think this guy was that intelligent...
Summary: 4 Stars

He has an opinion, and in my book, a pretty darn well educatedone. He used analogies I was shaking my head at wondering where hecame up with these from, and if the reading public would fully understand them. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, Mom, it's not for you. And anyone else that hasn't quite grown into big boys and girls. However, if you can get past the four letter words that sometimes add just the right touch, and other times are mearly annoying and get in the way, this is a pretty good book. Much better than I expected. No matter who you are, what you do or don't do, what you believe in, or don't believe in, there is something in here for you that will touch the very center of who you are. Two rants proved especially touching for me.. the one on travel. Not only how colorful, but how true. I know the guy gaffer taping the twine to the fridge box!!! He crushed a prize piece of pottery I carried from Kuala Lumpur to Boston only to sit next to this clown from the Chicago.

Book Review: The Art Of Shouting Your Mind
Summary: 4 Stars

Dennis Miller's rants combine hilarity and brutal honesty and with his gift of insight, his intellect, and his candor, Miller toes the line between coolness and utter jerkdom as he yells his views on topics that range from politics to popular culture. Miller is surprisingly patriotic, deeply cynical, individualistic, and often mildly insulting. I found his trademark obscure cultural references charming at first but they do grow old after a while. (Not that Miller cares.) The thing that won me over here is that unlike so many other motormouths in the entertainment business, Dennis Miller truly has something thoughtful to say and the points he makes are generally worth thinking over.

Book Review: Cynical Pop Culture Sub-Referencing at it's Finest
Summary: 4 Stars

Dennis can at times be a brilliant stand-up. This book is interesting for me in that the rants are improved on the page where all self-concious gesticulations and "had to be there" asides typical of the television show's broadcast have been removed. The book, and better yet the book on tape captures the true essence of what makes Dennis, very, very good. Playful, faux intellectual wordsmithing with the occasional well-made point. Well worth the read for the fan. My rating for the book was an 8, for the book on tape version a big 10. This type of monology begs to be performed, and without the annoying "interplay" with the audience Dennis is at his best.

Book Review: Funny stuff
Summary: 4 Stars

Many people complain that Dennis Miller's jokes go over most people's heads. Well, for those of us who can pick up on his often obscure references, this book is a treat.

In today's comedy environment, where scatalogical humor and inane observational humor is the norm, Miller is a beacon of light in a fog of mediocrity. He knows just when to drop one of those patented analogies he is so well known. Of course, the analogies would be irrelevant if the monologues themselves weren't sharp and satiric looks at society today.

So, I say go read this book. It's funnier than watching a Himalayan mountain guide getting gored by a yak.
