Book Reviews of Rants

Book Review: Dennis Miller is brillant and sexy on tv or in print!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Dennis always somehow manages to make me laugh even in print. He keeps his pace!!!I LOVE HIM !!!

Book Review: Arrogant, wishy-washy? Yes. Hilarious? Oh you betcha
Summary: 4 Stars

Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but often times, Dennis Miller's monologues are all about smoke and mirrors. He uses a high-falutin lexicon (tempered with a fair amount of obscenities and fellatio jokes), obscure references and comical names to disguise a very ambiguous philosophy. For the record, he is a self-avowed "conservative libertarian" and "a pragmatist." To this title, the reader of The Rants can add "curmudgeon." Indeed, Miller seems to have reached the cranky "in my day" stage of life a couple of decades early, sniping about every issue from effete liberals to infomercials (the latter being the subject of his most amusing rant) He has an annoying tendency to lapse into a cute little joke just before developing a serious thought -- i.e, while proposing a solution to the homeless problem, he takes the opportunity to razz on Kato Kaelin. But then again, he is a comedian, for whom many have few expectations.

For all his shortcomings, however, Miller has developed an inimitable rhetoric, a seamless interweaving of comedy and scathing political commentary. Not since Lenny Bruce has there been a comic who can so adroitly address social concerns while inspiring guffaws from his audience. He is the exact opposite of the dogmatic Rush Limbaugh, who skews all events to jibe with his vendetta against liberalism and adulation of conservatism. Instead, Miller tells it like it is, sans bs, with no political agenda. The only problem with this approach is that it's hard to gauge where the gifted comic really stands on any political issue (on most apolitical ones, he is -- like most of us -- just plain fed up).

Having been a fan of Miller's from the Weekend Update years, I checked the book out from the local library and dug it immensely. I progressed to the next step and bought his audio tape, which I listen to daily. (soon I hope to get my hands on the "microchip-plant-it-in-your-brain version of the Rants, which Miller pitches in the book) I n! ow force passengers in my car, at Tim Allen videotape (or gun, which is more lethal I cannot fully ascertain)-point, to join me in laughing and shrugging of shoulders at this comic genius. Grab a dictionary and an encyclopedia of obscure 20th century history and get set for some serious arse-whipping hilarity. In light of Dennis' excoriating slam-dunk of critics, I'd love to hear what he'd have to say about my little commentary.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be dying of cancer because the FDA didn't tell us everything about Olestra.

Book Review: Ranting Again
Summary: 4 Stars

Dennis Miller will always remain one of the five funniest comedians in my books. Along with Denis Leary, Robin Williams, George Carlin, and Eddie Murphy, have made living in the last 20 years of the 20th century almost tolerable. Almost. I don't want to get off an on rant here, but have you seen the state of the modern comedy these days? An associate of mine admitted that he frankly enjoys the banal, mindless gags that pass for humor in an Adam Sandler flick! Jim Carey hasn't been funny since `In Living Color' and Matt Stone and Trey Parker since `Cannibal: The Musical'.

Dennis Miller makes me laugh, his rants are among some of the most original stuff to come around in a long time. Like Carlin, he peppers his staccato-like speeches with witty and often contemporary jibes at the system, but where Carlin tends to be more general, Miller names names. Miller preaches moderation, common sense, compassion, but also wants you to use that two-stroke weed whacker engine you call a brain for more than just watching `Who Wants to be a Millionaire' or trying to assemble the tiger puzzle found inside a box of Frosted Flakes. Dennis Miller: The Rants is a good way do just that.

Miller attacks the O.J. trial for what it was, goes hunting Republicans, the legal system, the religious right and drags them out into the harsh unfeeling glare of public sentiment and holds them up for to examine and laugh at. I think Miller speaks from the heart and he really does feel this way about a lot of things he rants on. Admittedly the audio tapes of the rants are better than book, hearing him say them is obviously better than just reading them, but the book allows easier reference for quotes so you can make pithy comments in your e-mails. You can also catch Miller's rants on his hit TV show `Dennis Miller Live'. Have fun with it, that's what it's there for.

Book Review: RANT ON MR. MILLER!
Summary: 4 Stars

Any fan of Dennis Miller will want to read this book! Any fan of high-brow intellectual comedy will want to read this book! Any fan of current political attitudes (with a touch of political incorrectness) will want to read this book!

Dennis Miller is like the Rosetta Stone to high-I.Q., high references, and high laughter comedy. The Rants give him a chance to vent on topics ranging from: Parenting, Religion, Fame, Air Travel, and Civility. Unlike other comic tomes written by Jay leno, Drew Carey, and Bill Maher, you'll actually need to pay close attention as you laugh because Miller buries jokes within jokes. In fact, I had to venture over to my Webster's Dictionary just to look up a few words that were laced within a Rant...and then I found myself laughing even harder.

The only minor point that stands between The Rants and a 5-star rating is the fact that for the most part Miller's Rants are simply word-for-word translations of monlogues on his HBO show (mixed with a few comedic segments from his various concerts). However, if you're not an avid viewer of either of these areas then you'll be able to read and enjoy fresh material.

As for books written by comedians, I'd place The Rants alongside Jerry Seinfeld's Classic "SEIN-LANGUAGE" and George Carlin's "Brain Droppings". All are guaranteed to make you laugh...plenty!
