Book Reviews of Rants

Book Review: Excellent
Summary: 5 Stars

Miller accomplished a somewhat difficult feat in writing this book; the successful combination of rational, logical arguments and the presentation of them in a humorous, scathingly witty prose. One might argue that it's been done many times before by other authors in the political humor genre; I would agree, but not on this level. Miller's literary and comic blend is so succinct in this book that, in my opinion, he joins the upper echelon of satirists like Al Franken, Michael Moore, and P.J. O'Rourke. It is definitely the balance of "The Rants" that makes it so enticing and enjoyable; the intelligent, convincing arguments coupled with his amusing, blatantly cynical approach to the issues give you the impression of an unrecognized, bitter genius. Dennis Miller decries the abomination that is narcotic prohibition through the chapter on drugs ("If the government took away all the drugs in the world, people would spin around in circles on their front lawns until they fell down and saw God"), the alarming, newfound scarcity of the liberal, and the illogic of anti-abortion laws. Remaining liberals, read this book to laugh at, agree with, and have your notions confirmed; conservatives, read it for the challenges it presents to your views. Miller has established himself as a bold new presence in the vocation of putting politics to paper.

Book Review: Brilliant social commentary
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a compilation of the "rants" portion of Miller's "Dennis Miller Live" show that runs on HBO. Although I've had HBO for about ten years, I must have been out of town during the couple of years that this book compiles, as none of them seem familiar. For those unfamiliar with the show, a Dennis Miller rant is about a 1-3 minute monologue where Miller goes off on a tear about the subject (generally political) of the evening (ie: equal rights, sex in the White House, customer service). To see one of these is a beautiful thing -- Miller is not only funny, but uses complicated and eloquent speech in such a spitfire method that one sits back stunned at the verbal assault. He's also a brilliant satirist, pulling contemporary references out of his bags of slams quicker than you can say Jocylyn Elders. That said, as a book, it's a bit of a disappointment -- half the fun in the rants is watching Miller spew them forth, an effect that doesn't translate easily to the written medium. Kind of like how reading about a car wreck doesn't compare to seeing one.

Book Review: I don't wanna get off on a rant here . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

Dennis Miller sure finds a lot to rant about. I mean, this guy's has more beefs than the Ponderosa Steak House. Miller frequently works himself into such a lather, he makes Old Yeller during his final minutes of life look like Nicholson after the lobotomy in Cuckoo's Nest. Sure, once in a while this guy throws so many references at you he makes Joyce's Ulysses read like a Judy Blume novel, but hang in there. If you catch half the jokes, you'll laugh more than Ed McMahon on ether.

But Miller is always tongue in cheek, and doesn't take himself too seriously. No matter what your political persuasion, this book will make you laugh at the stupidity of other people, and more pointedly, at the stupidity of yourself. I highly recommend this book. Of course, that's just my opinion--I could be wrong.

Book Review: Miller is the sharpest knife in the drawer...hilarious book!
Summary: 5 Stars

Dennis Miller is one of the only celebrities I respect today, because he is actually an intelligent person, and definately one of the wittiest people I know of. His rants on modern day American life are cutting and brutally honest, and never fail to make me laugh about how stupid some things in the world are, and how much sense he actually makes. Miller is a comedic genius. If you want an entertaining read that will make you laugh and make you think, get this book. Anyone who says it isn't funny is either offended by Dennis' honesty, or is just too stupid to get the jokes. Terrific book.

Book Review: While the show maybe getting soft, the Rants are strong
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been a fan of Dennis Miller for more years than I care to share, this book brings me back the reason I first noticed him. As often cynical, acid tounge, views of the world that he somehow always seems to pepper with true concern.

While true that his show seems to be suffering somewhat this season, his rants are just as strong as ever. Considering this book is from his first 50 shows, they are even stronger.
