Book Reviews of Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster CaseyBook Review: Rantity Rant Summary: 5 Stars
I was just talking to Chuck Palahniuk about 30 minutes ago... I asked him advice on how to live, and he simply replied: "Live the best life you can, and teach thru experience"...at least that's what he signed in my copy of Rant. I bought this book the day it came out, being a fan of all his cult-originating novels, and when I first started...I didn't like it at all. The style is horribly original and like black coffee - takes some getting used to. By page 150 it was the best book I'd ever read. As I continued to be consumed by the tortured black head (and teeth) of Buster Casey (Rant), I began to like it even more and more. That's all I can say. Give this book a read if you want something original, and something good at the same time...but give it time, don't give up on it. One thing Chuck mentioned in our conversation is that he's really not as original as people think he is...that most of his story concepts are derived from real people and events...but this "style" disproves his own words. Check it out.
Book Review: Don't give up yet... Summary: 5 Stars
don't give up on chuck just yet.
Im not saying this is a great book because I haven't been up to date with much of his new books, and I also haven't yet gotten a chance to read this one.
Survivor, Lullaby, Choke, Stranger than Fiction, Fight Club, Diary, Invisible Monsters, Hunted.
Books I all very much enjoyed and find my self have flash backs of things a read and having to think and re-think and try and remember if I read it in a book, if it really happened (in a dream)
or if I watched it in a movie.
If you read this book and didn't enjoy it and feel like giving up, or maybe your new to this author and wanted to start with something that just came out.
Trust me start with one of the other titles I talked about.
If then you still are not digging him then by all means, try something that works for you.
Hope this hope you all out.
Cheers!
Book Review: I think this is a true achievement ... literary even! Summary: 5 Stars
I have only just begun to read the repertoire of Palahniuk ... and I started here with Rant. I thought it was not only a fascinating form with which to tell a story, but also a truly creepy and riveting story with a cast of characters not easily (if ever) forgotten. Now, having made my way through his earlier books I see a true growth and realized direction for Palahniuk as a writer. This is both very different from the likes of Choke and Fight Club while possessing the same air of absolute creepiness. But this is more "mature" creepiness ... not the Bukowskian bad boy story that just simply gets old and is often cliche. Rant is a wonderful kind of departure for Palahniuk and shows that he is on his way to becoming a significant literary writer ... not just a shocking for shock's sake (sometimes, not always) outlaw bad boy writer. Can't wait on the next installment of Rant!
Book Review: Palahniuk's Best To Date Summary: 5 Stars
After reading Chuck Palahniuk's "Rant", I have to put it up there as his most ambitious work to date. I was a bit disappointed with his last novel, Haunted, but it looks as though Palahniuk was able to get his act together this time around. There are many critics out there who will indeed bash Palahniuk for being "too eccentric" of a writer, but let it be known that some of the greatest satrists have also come under heavy criticism at one point in their lives. Rant's style will come as difficult for some to fully grasp at first, but as the novel progresses, the reader will soon learn to adapt to its "Oral History" narrative, part of which makes the novel so compelling. A thrill of a read and one not apt for close-minded, satire hating individuals.
Book Review: An Amazing Book! Summary: 5 Stars
To put it simply, I loved this book! When I first started to read it I was a little put off by how the author had the story narrated but I came to love it. The book has different people telling different accounts connected to the main character Rant/Buster Casey. At first each person would bring up some event that doesn't make sense but when the other accounts from different people were read you understand what is going on. The imagination the author must have to think of such a story! I didn't even know he wrote Fight Club when I picked up the book but I will definitely be looking for other books of his. I enjoyed this book and will tell others about it and the author.
