Book Review: Challenging material but very good

This second volume of solo guitar music by Towner is decidedly more difficult than the first one. Where vol.1 was a sort of "best of R.T." that included his tunes from a longer time span, most of these tunes are found on his latest solo guitar CD. This is advanced stuff that makes Towner's style very clear to anyone going through these. The "improvisation sections" following the head of each tune offer a lot of ideas which, when combined spontaneously, lead the way to improvising like Towner. His style is a unique combination of classical guitar and jazz harmonies. Even if the tunes are too hard for you, I do recommend the book for learning about harmony and composition.
Summary of Ralph Towner: Guitar Works, Volume 2
Towner is one of the most diversely talented musicians of the past half-century, having made notable recordings of classical, jazz, folk and world music. Following a classical-conservatory education, studying classical composition and guitar, Towner then joined world music pioneer Paul Winter's Consort ensemble in the late 1960s. Along with band members Paul McCandless, Glen Moore, and Collin Walcott, Towner left the Winter Consort in 1970 to form the group Oregon, which over the course of the 1970s issued a number of highly influential records mixing folk music, Indian classical forms, and avant-garde jazz-influenced free improvisation. As well as collaborating in concert and/or recording with many artists, Towner has recorded over two-hundred of his instrumental compositions, with works being commissioned and performed by some of the world s leading orchestras.
