Book Reviews of the Raise Your Voice 2nd edition

Customer Review: Be very, VERY careful
Summary: 1 Stars

Here's the skinny of it:

I've trashed my voice doing the exercises in this book. I can't even hit the high notes I used to anymore. I'm contemplating going for vocal therapy. I have gigs to perform. I have totally abandoned doing anything from this book in desperation to get my voice back.

Now the long of it:

I'm not a beginning singer who never sung before and all of a sudden tried to hit the high notes without properly warming up. I sing regularly in a rock / variety band and been singing for over 20 years. People have told me I have a powerful voice (I surmise that if I didn't sound good, they wouldn't have bothered calling me back for gigs). I've successfully and dilligently trained my voice using "real" vocal exercises (CDs of Ariella Vacarino and Bob Tasman-Smith). However, I don't do it for living, I have a day job.

I got this book because I just wanted to see if I could increase my range some so that I can perhaps add songs to my repetoire that are a bit out of my range. This was a BAD idea.

Also, given the number of advertizements in this book (almost like info-mercials), for me, reading this book, was a grand waste of my valuable time and effort (and money). From this personal experience, I'm now stunned and in total awe and amazement how this book got five star reviews from so many people and even in the previous version of this book. Why didn't it work for me? Perhaps my voice has already reached it's high limit? Maybe I need to even more warm-ups? Maybe I caught a bad virus? Are all the reviews honest??

Well, as you can see, I'm totally confused. Still, I am trying to give the book benefit of the doubt. If all these people found this book helpful and are really, truly now singing higher notes, well, more power to them. If you decide to get this book, I hope you have success too.

However, I'm sorry to say, for my case, after I've read and re-read following all the instructions carefully in this book to the best of my ability, honestly, it didn't work for me. Instead, I've suffered damaging regression. I had to let you all know. So proceed with caution. Too, all other advice in the book, you can get elsewhere with more scholarly work (I'm thinking Richard Miller books). In conclusion, training with a experienced teacher is perhaps the best choice for me. Meanwhile, when I hopefully get my voice back, I'll stay happy with my range and won't try to raise my voice again.
