Book Reviews of Raggedy Ann Stories

Book Review: Charming stories, but then there's Dinah, remember?
Summary: 3 Stars

I'd have to agree that the stories are charming from an adult perspective. However, as in many pieces of classic literature the representation of the African-American maid "Dinah" working for a extra white family is pretty bad. In this particular collection Dinah appears only once, but there is an illustration replete with head wrap, laundry wringer, and extra large lips. Dinah is also the only character who gets the colloquial speech.."Jess lemme hang Miss Raggedy on de line in de bright sunshine foh haff an hour..". Since she only appears in one story it is avoidable - but it's there. Buyer beware.

Book Review: A GENTLE PEEK INTO AN INGENOUS PAST
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the first of the classic Raggedy Ann books, of which there are nine more. It consists of 12 short tales with minimal plots. All are syrupy with little morals included quite blatantly, but antique children's books had been expected to Instruct as well as Entertain.

This little book would not appeal to modern youngsters or belong in a classroom setting, but can be enjoyed one chapter at a time as a bedtime ritual for parent-child bonding and book appreciation. Of special interest to children who actually own a raggedy doll.

The author's preface explains how he came to write these stories, for they were inspired by an actual old rag doll handed down in his family. His daughter's name is Marcella--also that of the little girl who owns so many dolls in her Victorian style nursery.

This collection reveals to modern readers the timeless appeal of this virtuous doll: her compassion for small animals, her perennial smile, her sweet and even- tempered personality, her consideration for the feelings of others (Marcella, her mistress, and of other dolls). Too good to be true of course, yet it is Gruelle's attempt to gently teach his young daughter in social and moral arts.

If you read Raggedy Ann as a child, you might consider this new edition with the charming illustrations. It might even inspire you to give Raggedy Ann to a special youngster, or dig out your old doll, or start your own collection. I remember how thrilled I was to discover the words, I LOVE YOU, on her heart! After all, that's what dolls do best--be there for you when you need them with a guarantee of unconditional love!
