Book Review: Robin's had a crazy life! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're a Stern fan or just a Robin fan you gotta read this book...I knew Robin had an interesting life but I didn't realize just HOW interesting until now!
Book Review: Someone to really respect Summary: 4 Stars
I read this book a few years ago and it has stuck with me ever since.
Truth be told, I was only interested in Robin Quivers because she was on Howard Stern's show. She was entertaining in her own right but I was a bit annoyed at her constant agreeing with him (or what I thought was that. If these critics bothered listening to Howard's show, they'd know that she agreed with him about half the time - if that!) and by that laugh.
BUT after reading her autobiography, I came to like her just as much as Howard and developed much respect for her work ethic and her determination to overcome huge obstacles.
Unlike *some* celebrities, who just about make a living from the fact that they were molested as a child, Robin dealt with it and moved on. She proved time and again on Howard's radio show (as well as on TV and the few videos that Howard made over the years) that she could have people joke about it and she took the teasing like a champ.
Robin's and Howard's paths zigzagged towards each other and they've been inseparable ever since. (And, according to her, she was tricked into the military and when she wanted to get out of it, she realized she couldn't - not without being dishonorably discharged. It's the only reason why she served.)
Robin fought against some pretty bad odds, got her priorities straight and has been on the right track ever since.
Book Review: I Don't Believe She Wrote It: Summary: 4 Stars
When I first heard that Robin was penning a book after Howard Stern's success in the publishing trade, I rolled my eyes. It sounded, more than anything, like nothing but a blatant cashing-in... another attempt by somebody with nothing to say and far too many pages to say it... all granted to someone because of fame and not much else.
The truth is, however, that the book is GREAT.
The prose here is really very sophisticated -- a natural rhythm is in place, here -- this is the work of somebody with a very advanced sense of literary flavor. I honestly don't believe that Robin wrote the book, and the reason is that the voice in the prose simply doesn't seem to be hers. Writing talent on this level is a very rare thing -- no question in my mind that this was ghost-written... but that doesn't mean that it should be skipped, however.
The truth is that the book is a narrative masterclass.
Whoever wrote this OWES us another title.
Book Review: A good, hearty read Summary: 4 Stars
If you're a listener of "The Howard Stern Show" and you have wondered why a black woman with obvious intelligence would take the controversial position of being Stern's sidekick, read this book.Quivers delves deep into her soul, reveals her often difficult childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood and leaves you with a picture of someone who emerged from the pain secure and self-assured. But though her soul searching is transferred to paper eloquently and with detail, as a black woman I found myself wondering why, through the years, Quivers has managed to form few, if any lasting relationships with other blacks. Other than a close relationship with a foster brother, as an adult she appears to have bonded solely with whites. If any of Quivers' close alliances are with blacks, they are neither alluded to nor explored in the book. It is, nevertheless, a well-written, personable read, and unravels, at least to some degree, the mystery of Robin Quivers.
