Book Reviews of Quest for the Living God: Mapping Frontiers in the Theology of God

Book Review: Waste of time and money.
Summary: 1 Stars

New Agey assessment of varying thoughts on God
The book was trite, and borrowed vastly from other authors. She presents a vision of God, warped from the amalgamation of so many theses. Her world view is premised on : "the church oppresses women". Yet she is a woman of that church - a nun, AND an academic, employed by an American University, sheltered (and obviously well fed), free to write and speak in any anti-catholic, anti-church expression she chooses. She makes millions of dollars on her ramblings, yet speaks of the struggle of the oppressed women of the christian church!! Fraudulent. Inauthentic. She is a malcontent in her church, desperate to create a church that can reconcile her own deep disappointment in herself and her vocation. Sad, really.
Her priamry source of "vision" is another malcontent, Karl Rahner. A fraud, also, he called himself a jesuit priest - while carrying on a 40 year secret affair with a married woman. He too was unable to reconcile his reality with the fraudulent image he presented to the world. So, like Elizabeth, instead of searching within for how they may become stronger in their faith, closer to God, they choose to attack the faith construct they dishonestly inhabit.

Unfortunately, many will read this rubbish, and be confused as to the real living God, the God of Catholicism (which she purports with little integrity to describe). May those who are confused by her be sure of one thing: the truth is in the scripture. God is not a pansy. God is not a womanly chick friend. God is not a pineapple.
God hates evil, and punishes those who practice it. God is not Muhammed. Jesus was very clear in his instruction about His Father. Scripture does not cause confusion. Confused "christian" writers cause confusion -- and happily, as it allows them to muddle deepr without accountability. Book is a complete waste of money.

Summary of Quest for the Living God: Mapping Frontiers in the Theology of God

From the author's introduction: Since the middle of the twentieth century there has been a renaissance of new insights into God in the Christian tradition. On different continents, under pressure from historical events and social conditions, people of faith have glimpsed the living God in fresh ways. It is not that a wholly different God is discovered from the One believed in by previous generations. Christian faith does not believe in a new God but, finding itself in new situations, seeks the presence of God there. Aspects long-forgotten are brought into new relationships with current events, and the depths of divine compassion are appreciated in ways not previously imagined.

This book further explores these discoveries. After the first chapter describes Elizabeth Johnson's point of departure and the rules of engagement, each succeeding chapter distills a discrete idea of God. Featured are transcendental, political, liberation, feminist, black, hispanic, interreligious, and ecological theologies, ending with the particular Christian idea of the one God as Trinity. The aim of the book is to increase the light of theological knowledge, "ever ancient, ever new," among a wide circle of people, including students, pastoral ministers, and everyone who questions, wonders, or thinks about their faith.
